Fashion week is a time for collegiettes to sit back and scroll through our favorite designers’ new collections. While we definitely pay homage to our favs, obsessing over legends like Tommy Hilfiger and Diane Von Furstenberg, every NYFW also highlights new and lesser-known designers onto the scene. Here are just a few of the many designers at this year’s NYFW that you should definitely be looking out for.
Jonathan Simkhai
Jonathan Simkhai, a New York based designer who launched his label in 2010, amazed at NYFW. He designs for the modern cosmopolitan woman, which was seen in his masculine meets feminine designs. His collection’s form fitting silhouettes, cut outs, and minimalistic color, display the designer’s simple yet sexy style. It girl, Gigi Hadid, is one of his fans. Just another one of the reason to keep your eye out for Simkhai.
Prabal Gurung
Another lesser-known designer that did great things at NYFW is Prabal Gurung. The designer was born in Singapore, but grew up in Nepal. As a tribute to the devastating earthquake that hit his country of Nepal in April, Gurung brought out 30 Buddisht monks in the beginning of his show to lead a prayer for the devastation of those affected by the earthquake. Not only was this a beautiful sentiment, his collection didn’t disappoint either. He incorporated traditional Nepali colors while mixing in trendier elements of fringe and embroidery. His combination of compassion and style is a unique element in the sometimes cut throat fashion world.
Edun
A brand that shined at NYFW, and even before the show, is Edun. The collaboration between Ali Hewson and Bono, this brand also partners with African artisans in their designs. Their focus is sustainability, which was evident in their Spring 2016 collection. The designers drew inspiration from the unique, ritual style of African tribes. Macramé detail and movement in the silhouettes tied together the traditional and modern elements.
