At long last, we now know the dress code of this year’s Met Gala! The Met Gala is the annual gala to mark the opening of the exhibit at the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. According to the Met’s website, their exhibition is entitled Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty. The exhibit will be examining the work of Lagerfeld, showcasing both pieces and sketches of his. The dress code for the gala is “In honor of Karl”.
If you are unfamiliar with Karl Lagerfeld, he was a big name in the fashion industry. He worked alongside many fashion houses, including Balmain and Chanel, as well as having created his own self-named brand (Vogue). I can envision different guests wearing outfits that take inspiration from runway pieces of his, or of designs of his from the labels that he worked with. Since his career spanned decades, fashions inspired by those decades might be a choice as well.
It is always interesting to see how guests interpret the theme. Last year, the exhibit was “In America: An Anthology of American Fashion.” The dress code was ‘gilded glamour’ (NBC). The theme is open to interpretation, and we were gifted with Blake Lively’s beautiful Statue of Liberty inspired dress, as well as looks from Cardi B, Billie Eilish, and Megan Thee Stallion that re-envisioned the silhouette of women’s dresses from the Gilded Era. (Insider). We also saw Kim Kardashian’s controversial Marilyn Monroe dress. Kardashian seemed to be inspired by the title of last year’s exhibit, which discusses American fashion in a broader sense (NBC). I am not discussing whether or not she should have worn the dress, but since she was thinking of American fashion, an iconic dress worn by an iconic American actress makes more sense as to why she chose to wear what she did.
Keeping that in mind, I am looking forward to seeing how this year’s guests will interpret the theme. Will they plan their outfit by the dress code, or will they go by the exhibit’s title? We’ll just have to wait until May 1st.
XO, Erin
