This past weekend at Coachella gave us a euphoric collab from Labrinth and Billie Eilish, a rekindled romance between Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello, a rock-filled reunion from Blink-182, and more. These are just a few of the highlights from Weekend 1. Coachella has been trending all over Tik Tok with invite-only parties like Revolve Festival, with influencers like Alix Earle doing GRWMs for the event.
The past weekend had a stellar lineup featuring artists like Bad Bunny, Metro Boomin, BlackPink, Frank Ocean, and Dominic Fike. Each artist delivered unforgettable performances, so let’s take a look into some of those moments.
Bad Bunny stole the show on night 1 and made history by being the first Latino artist to be a headliner for the festival. He brought out special guest Post Malone for songs “La CanciĂłn” and “Yonaguni.” The majority of Bad Bunny’s set was in Spanish per the fans’ request, and he gave respect to the music that influenced his career through a video display. Undoubtedly, his performance paid homage to his culture and showed love toward his fan base.Â
Another top performance on night 1 was Metro Boomin, who played many songs from his latest album, Heroes & Villains. The producer delivered a star-studded performance with special appearances from artists like The Weeknd, 21 Savage, and Future. I’m hoping he’ll bring the same energy to Fairfield next weekend, and maybe he’ll be joined by a special performer or two.Â
On Saturday, the headliner BlackPink showed how K-Pop has taken over the world. Their performance had many mind-blowing elements, like fireworks, a light show, and a strongly choreographed routine, showing just how powerful the K-Pop fandom is.Â
The most anticipated headliner was Frank Ocean, who performed on Sunday. Coachella was Ocean’s first performance in six years, and fans were disappointed, to say the least. He showed up over an hour late and had a confusing set design. The audience wondered why he wasn’t performing his music live and were upset that he didn’t play many of his top hits. Eventually, his set ended early, and Ocean said he was kicked off because of a time curfew. Ocean also, last minute, pulled out of the YouTube live stream.
Since Coachella is out of most of our budget, the live stream is a way to highlight the performances from the weekend for those at home. Although the experience of being at a concert and watching one is vastly different, it’s still exciting for those who aren’t physically in attendance. Plus, being in the comfort of your home vs. standing in the hot California desert is probably a better option.
Overall, Coachella has offered many surprises from celebrities and moments that’ll go down in the festival’s history. It broke many barriers for artists and has been a place of growth for rising artists. I can’t wait to see what eventful moments Coachella holds this weekend.Â
