I don’t know about anyone else but, lately, I haven’t been able to go a day without watching a movie. While scrolling through the streaming services I somehow always find myself in the RomCom section, like a habit, I always end up choosing one.

I over-romanticize everything, and I live vicariously through the characters while watching these. Living in New York has made me love them even more. Something about fashion journalists in the early 2000s in NYC falling in love boosts my serotonin, and I think you’ll agree.

Because I’ve watched many movies in 2024 so far, I figured I’d share my top six favorites, and tell you why everyone needs to watch or rewatch them immediately.

  1. How to Lose a Guy In Ten Days: This might be my all-time favorite movie. Everyone is or should be in love with Matthew McConaughey in this, and his on-screen chemistry with Kate Hudson, has me smiling at the TV the whole time. What I love about this movie is the idea of accidentally falling in love. It has all the cliches except, not in the way you’d expect. After watching this you’ll want to be on the kiss cam at a Knicks game, be waiting for your dream person to chase your cab down, and you’ll want to be “Ben’s Partner”.
  1. 27 Dresses: Always a bridesmaid, never a bride. That’s the plot of the movie, how do you become a bride after being a bridesmaid after being a bridesmaid a million times? This movie showed me the importance of putting yourself first, even the people with the biggest hearts for others need to think of their hearts first. When it comes to the love part of the movie I took away that sometimes you’re really looking for love in the wrong places, and sometimes it comes from where you least expect it. You’ll love watching journalists fall in love and a good dance scene in a bar never hurt anyone.
  1.  13 going on 30: Let me start by saying that if I could watch a movie every day it would be this one, solely maybe because of the outfits. Growing up watching this movie I always thought it was silly but watching it now really opened my eyes. Although the concept might be silly, it shows me the importance of knowing you’ll never be able to change the past but you can change your present self, and how much to appreciate the love you have around you. And who knows, maybe your future husband was in your middle school class this whole time. Jennifer Gardener was my idol growing up and if I could’ve had her character’s life I would!
  1. Love at First Sight: One of these is not like the others, if you haven’t noticed I’m a sucker for early 2000s RomComs, but this one is from a bit later, 2023 to be exact. As cliche as the title is, the events in the movie make it feel like it has a deeper meaning. As I was watching this, the song Margaret by Lana Del Rey came to mind. I guess when you know you know, and the characters in the movie know. I loved everything about this movie and the narration made it super unique and unlike anything I’ve watched in a while. It made me want to fall in love with a stranger too.
  1. The Holiday: Some could technically consider this a Christmas movie, but I say this could be watched all year. If you want to watch a movie with the most iconic cast ever this is the one for you. Kate Winslet, Jude Law, Cameron Diaz, Jack Black, need I see more? Sometimes all you need is a change of scenery to reinvent yourself, and the unexpected happens. I love movies about unexpected love, especially when two strangers worldwide switch houses for fun, and both end up finding it.
  1. My Best Friend’s Wedding: This is another one with yet an iconic cast, Julia Fox, Cameron Diaz, and Dermot Mulroney are like a cast made in RomCom heaven. There’s not a part of this movie that I don’t love, but I specifically love that it doesn’t have the traditional RomCom ending. If you need a movie to teach you the importance of your friendships over romance this is the one for you. Sometimes what you want, isn’t meant to be but your friends are going to be the most important and be there to help you fix things.

Any day, any time, any occasion, these are my go-to movies that could fix everything about my day. So what are you waiting for run to your TV, get ready for the laughs, and maybe some tears, and go watch these right now.

Hi y'all I'm Alexia. I'm currently living in NYC as a Junior at FIT! Obviously I love all things fashion, so I like writing about that. But outside of fashion my interests involve, books, rom-coms (or any movie for that matter), politics, sustainability, beauty, baking, and art and music.
