A Comprehensive Guide to Sad-Girl Literature

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FIT chapter.

Oh, being a woman in your twenties. A time filled with turmoil, uncertainty, maybe being a little messy sometimes. It’s easy to feel lost, like you have no direction in life. Maybe you don’t know what you wanna do after college. Or maybe you thought you did but after slaving away for hours doing unpaid labor for your internship, you realize that you hate the thing you dreamed about for years.

If there’s one thing to be agreed upon, it’s that it’s a confusing time. As actress, singer, and model extraordinaire Suki Waterhouse once said, “I think when you’re a young woman in your twenties… it’s the trenches.” Between personal problems and the general state of the world, it’s no wonder that we are turning to media to reflect our experiences. Luckily, authors are listening, paving the path for a new genre: Sad-Girl Literature.

Warning: Many of these books contain dark subject matter that may be triggering to certain people. Always check trigger warnings before picking up a book! I promise, it will not spoil it.
