How to Maintain a Long Distance Relationship

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FIT chapter.

Long distance relationships are challenging, yet rewarding. Despite the struggle, we’ll do anything for those we love. To be in a long distance relationship allows each individual to grow, but become stronger as one. During the time spent apart, couples will learn to cherish every moment spent together, and never take it for granted.

1. Call your significant other

Even if you have a spare 5 minutes, call your significant other to check in and say that you love them. It will make their day, and to hear one another’s voice makes the distance feel a little less scary.

2. Remind your significant other that you love them and why

Reassurance is something that everyone needs at one point or another, however in long distance relationships, we may need it a little more often. It is completely normal to wonder “does he still love me?” while being miles apart, although the answer is yes! Hearing it often makes us feel better than letting our minds wonder.

3. Look at old photos

Look at your pictures taken together to remind yourself of why you are doing this long distance relationship and reminisce on the happy memories. This puts your mind at ease and in a happy state of mind.

4. Plan a visit

This can be a tough one depending on the distance, but it is 100% worth it! When you see your significant other for the first time again, you will instantly be overwhelmed with love and happiness.

5. Give each other space

Distance can be hard in terms of not knowing where your significant other is or what they are doing at every moment, but this is a good thing! It will allow both of you to do your own thing and have a sense of freedom. Send a few texts throughout the day and at night to catch up.
