Kombucha is one of those health trends that has been floating around for a while, but not everyone knows exactly what it is or why it’s so good for you. For the skeptics out there, we’re about to break it down for you:
What Is Kombucha?
Kombucha is a fermented and slightly effervescent black or green tea drink that comes in lots of different flavors. It is made by adding a colony of bacteria and yeast (the good kind!) to a sugar and tea mix and letting it ferment. Some people think it has a slightly alcoholic or vinegary taste, depending on the flavor. It is definitely not for everyone, but a lot of people love the taste!
What Does It Do?
There are so many health benefits of drinking kombucha. Some research indicates that kombucha’s “good bacteria” and probiotics can help fight colds and lower cholesterol, but the biggest claim is that it promotes a healthy gut by aiding digestion and settling any stomach issues. It also is rich in B vitamins that help regulate your metabolism and give you energy. It’s coffee’s healthy substitute!
Where Can I Get it?
Kombucha is sold almost everywhere, from Whole Foods to Target. The FIT dining hall even carries a few options. Here are some of my favorites and where to get them:
Health-Ade Kombucha is one of my favorites – especially the Maca Berry flavor! Heath-Ade is sold at City Gourmet Market on the corner of 27th and 8th and at Whole Foods and Target.
The FIT dining hall is always fully stocked in Kevita Kombucha in tons of different flavors. Some of my favorites are Pineapple Peach, Lavender Melon, and Dragonfruit Lemongrass.
Humm Coconut Lime Kombucha is sweet and tastes just like summer. You can find it at Target in lots of flavors.
If you’re looking to make a small change in your routine towards a healthier version of yourself, try switching out your usual soda with kombucha once or twice a week. One step closer to being a ~health goddess~.
