If you’ve ever been interested in finding ways to make your curls flourish, simply wanted to be a part of a community that embraces, empowers and uplifts individuals or need hair care advice after the ‘big chop’, then I have good news to share. A new organization has made its way to FIU!
Curly in College is an organization that celebrates and promotes students living a life with curly hair on college campuses. There are chapters throughout campuses nationwide and we even have a chapter here at FIU since Fall of 2017.
This organization is a great way for individuals with all hair types, especially curly hair, to come and learn about tips and techniques to care for their hair and have open discussions about everything curly. Whether you’ve been rocking your natural hair for years or are looking to get started, this is the place to be! Curly in College is sponsored by tons of companies such as Shea Moisture, TresseNoire and EDEN BodyWorks that allow students to try products that correlate to their hair type.
Jordan Chatman, president of FIU CIC, is eager to build this organization into something unforgettable and believes that Curly in College can positively enhance members’ college experience.
“We are fortunate enough to have a school that perhaps have the most individuals with this type of hair and for that reason you will never be alone in your journey of natural hair. Unfortunately, due to natural hair being difficult to manage, it deters many men and females from embracing their hair. We hope our strength in numbers, product resource and information, and support overall will make those mornings, days & nights a little easier in regards to your curls”, says Chatman.
FIU’s Curly in College will be hosting meetings and events throughout the school year including “FroDown” which will have live demos, product giveaways, music and more!
