Attention all walkers, runners, and volunteers: come join the Special Olympics as they host their annual “Sponsor an Athlete” 5K on April 15, 2018 at Gulliver Prep. Whether you’re a seasoned runner or someone who just enjoys the outdoors then I encourage you to gather a team and join! Not only are 5K’s a fantastic way to get active, they promote teamwork by inspiring friends, family and coworkers to come together and get moving for a cause.
At the this years annual “Sponsor an Athlete” 5K all attendees will be greeted by Pinecrest Vice Mayor Douglas Kraft as well as Frank Steel, the Gulliver Head of School. Prior to the 5K, guests can enjoy a pancake breakfast from local community vendors inside the Olympic Village. Once the walk/run is finished and the teams have been awarded their accolades, guests can visit the Olympic Village to enjoy goodies and services from local community vendors. This 5K is unique in that it features not only a walk/run in the morning, but a handful of fun activities afterward for families and friends to enjoy.
This event strengthens the Miami-Dade community and supports the Special Olympics with their cause to create a more unified life for those with intellectual disabilities. The Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympic athletes and their community. If you think this event sounds right for you, please don’t hesitate to join! Teams have already started coming together and fundraising so don’t hesitate to gather your friends, family and teammates for this special event!
