An NBA court is a big stage to make a statement. As one often says about music, sports too are a universal language. Sports bring all kinds of people together, millions of people, to share and root for their favorite teams playing the game they all love. This is exactly the stage Brown Issues, a Sacramento based organization where college students come together to educate the city “about community issues pertaining to the Latino/Latina community” knew they needed to bring attention to an issue pertinent to so many in their community.
During this past Saturday night’s halftime show of the Kings vs. Clippers game, a group of students from the organization held a pro-immigrant rights demonstration, the first on such a massive platform. The group unveiled a banner of a butterfly, with two simple but incredibly important words, “Defend DACA.” The program, which has been rescinded by the current administration, was created to give young people brought to the United States as children an opportunity to stay in the country and continue to contribute their skill and their talent.
While the group expected the worst, they were surprised by the positive reaction and support they received from the crowd. The group hopes that demonstrations like these will give the community the hope that by coming together and creating awareness, actual change can occur. As one of the leaders of Brown Issues said of the moment, “California is a state that leads and when California leads, everyone else follows and that’s how we want to make sure that we take this message to the national level.”Â
