The Golden Globes is known to be Hollywood’s kick off social event at the beginning of every new year. The 2018 Golden Globes was no different, but it included several major statements. Celebrities normally make extravagant appearances and express themselves through bold and vivid fashion that takes the paparazzi by storm. This year, they decided to take an approach that would send a powerful message to the viewers watching at home, and especially to anyone who has ever been the victim of sexual harassment and may be afraid to speak up. Celebrities came together and wore black in support of the victims of sexual assault and gave them a voice. Victims have been muted for far too long.

A-list celebrities like Meryl Streep, Heidi Klum and Dakota Johnson followed the movement as they strutted the red carpet in their exquisite black gowns. It was fascinating to see celebrities come together to pay tribute to those who feel helpless and vulnerable. Rape and sexual assault should never be taboo or an uncomfortable topic of conversation. The only way to put an end to this aberrant behavior is to put a spotlight on not only the subject matter, but also on the subject violators. When famous icons take a stand, others are more likely to follow the movement to combat against sexual assault.

Fortunately, the celebrities were not only there to make a fashion statement.  “Time’s up”, the women’s initiative to unite as one voice against sexual harassment was the theme for most the night, especially during Oprah Winfrey’s inspirational acceptance speech. “For too long, women have not been heard or believed if they dared to speak their truth to the power of those men… But their time is up,” Ms. Winfrey said to thunderous applause. She exuded motivation and the willingness to be the voice for those who feel forgotten. 2018 has been said to be the year of innovation and excitement because of the ventures to come. I also see it as a year of empowerment and unity. You alone are one voice but together we are an unstoppable force. It takes a drop to make up an ocean, be that drop that changes the world.
