Julia Fox is a commonly known writer, actress, and ex-dominatrix. The star entered the public eye after her role as Julia in Uncut Gems, where she famously played a character written about her. Years after the movie’s release, the star faced international scrutiny after a clip of her on the podcast Call Her Daddy went viral. In the clip, host Alex Cooper asks Fox if she thinks she is Kanye West’s (her then-boyfriend’s) muse. “A little, maybe,” Fox responded. Cooper continued, asking her what she meant by the term “muse”. Fox responded, “I mean, I was Josh Safdie’s muse when he wrote Uncut Gems”. Her pronunciation (or lack thereof) of the words “Uncut Gems” made her TikTok’s then-favorite meme and was referenced in viral comedy videos for months to come. Popular comments on the video posted to Spotify’s TikTok read, “Did anyone know who she was before Ye?” and “Uncut Jams? So like Grapes?” Even celebrities like Shay Mitchell hopped on the trend, donning a TikTok filter of the thick eyeliner Fox was known for, and mimicking her pronunciation of “Uncut Gems”.

Instead of shying away from the online attention, Fox embraced it. She made videos that platformed her unconventional personality and fashion style (see her famous apartment tour here), and it wasn’t long before she amassed a TikTok following of over 1.7 million followers. Julia was praised for her authenticity and humor. After a month of dating, the relationship between Fox and West fizzled out, but Julia’s career in the limelight had just begun.

Since then, Fox has donned countless magazine covers like RollaCosta, CYBR magazine, New York Magazine, and Vogue. She’s opened for shows at New York Fashion Week, starred in four more movies, and been interviewed by icons like Drew Barrymore and Ziwe for her New York Times Bestseller, Down the Drain.

In her internationally acclaimed memoir, Fox opens up about the struggles of her upbringing as a poor Italian child growing up between New York and Italy. She proves to be an extremely talented writer and storyteller as she relives her trying childhood and young adulthood. Even through her missteps, the reader can’t help but to be on Fox’s side, completely enamored with the melancholic glamour of Julia Fox.

A cultural and fashion icon, Julia Fox truly is a mastermind. To quote the last line of her book, “I was ridiculed for doing whatever I had to do to survive. But now everyone is wearing latex.”
