Kristen Nyman is not your regular college girl. She’s a proud panther, Alpha Xi Delta sister, and full rounded leader that has been able to motivate and inspire many of those close enough to her. For these reasons and beyond she is more than deserving of carrying the title of Her Campus FIU’s campus celebrity. To know more about this sweet girl filled lots of fun and memorable memories to share read what she had to say to us below.
Age: 19
Major: International Relations & Political Science
Minor: Spanish Language and Culture
Certificates: National Security Studies & Latin American and Caribbean Studies
Year: Junior
Favorite FIU memory:
I have had more memorable moments at FIU than the editors at Her Campus would care for me to share in detail. That said, I will touch upon a number of my favorite moments which have included speaking during the luminaria ceremony at the 2014 Relay for Life, receiving my best delegate award at Harvard’s Model United Nations Conference 2014, opening a little white bid envelope in 2012 to read Alpha Xi Delta written above my name, watching 14 of my rho babies run home on bid day just a few weeks ago, and campaigning day and night for my friends and colleagues during this past SGA election. My alma mater will forever hold very special memories for me.
What are you involved in on campus?
Delegate of FIUnite, FIU Political Party
Head Delegate of the FIU Model United Nations Program
Financial Vice President of the FIU International Affairs Society
Environmental Caucus Chair for the FIU College Democrats
Mission Education Chair for FIU’s Relay for Life
Miss Relay for Life 2014
Rho Gamma, FIU’s 2014 Panhellenic Recruitment
Sister of Alpha Xi Delta, Theta Xi Chapter, PC 2012
Why did you choose to join a sorority?
I was inspired by the philanthropic efforts, selfless service, constant support, and unrelenting ambition I saw within the FIU Greek community and realized that the various Greek councils at FIU work as catalysts for leaders to grow and prosper. The Greek community is the pulse of FIU.
How has being a Rho Gamma impacted your life?
I have never been the kind of woman to attach myself emotionally to those I’m working with but when I saw my Rho babies grow and prosper throughout what seemed to be the longest two weekends of my life, my eyes and heart were open and full of an unprecedented amount of love for my girls. In showing them how to find an organization that best fits their values and goals they showed me how to care about a group of women and their wants and needs above my own.
What are your plans after graduation?
After graduation I hope to move to our nation’s beautiful capital to receive my master’s in National Security Studies with a focus on non- traditional security at Georgetown University. Following that, I hope to gain entry level experience in the domestic security field as to someday write policy that shapes our country’s national security agenda.
Fun Fact:I have been a salsa instructor for almost 6 years!
