Damien Chazelle’s six-time Oscar-winning 2016 musical, La La Land, is going to Broadway. This 2016 film stars Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling as an aspiring actress and jazz musician, who meet and fall in love as they chase their dreams in Los Angeles. It has been praised by many for its exceptional cinematography, music, use of color in storytelling, tribute and references to Old Hollywood, and bittersweet ending.
The news of this stage adaptation was announced on Tuesday, February 7th by Variety, and will be produced by Marc Platt and Lionsgate. “I’m thrilled to reunite with Lionsgate and the incredible team behind ‘La La Land’ to adapt the movie for the Broadway stage, the next exciting chapter in its evolution,” said Platt. “We’ve assembled a world-class team to create a musical that will delight ‘La La Land’s’ millions of current fans and introduce the property to a whole new audience.”
Tony-winning director, Bartlett Sher, will be directing based on a book by playwrights Ayad Akhtar and Matthew Decker. The show will feature music by Justin Hurwitz and lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who worked on the movie and are also known for their work on Broadway with Dear Evan Hansen and The Greatest Showman.
La La Land is set to open on Broadway at an undetermined date, and there is currently no news on their Broadway cast.
