The country tuned in last night as President Trump announced his Supreme Court Justice nominee. Following Antonin Scalia’s sudden this past year, there has been a vacant seat that many Americans placed a high value of importance on — per exit polling. “Millions of voters said this was the single most important issue for them when they voted for me for president,” Trump said. “I am a man of my word.” President Trump, who has been determined to stay true to his campaign promises, nominated conservative Neil Gorsuch. Mr. Trump had great things to say about the 49-year-old federal appellate judge, who may also be the youngest-ever Supreme Court justice if confirmed.
“Judge Gorsuch has outstanding legal skills, a brilliant mind, tremendous discipline, and has earned bipartisan support.”
“It is an extraordinary résumé — as good as it gets.”
So, what happens now? To be confirmed, Neil Gorsuch needs 60 votes in the senate. Since Republicans now control both the house and the senate, Democrats are likely to backlash — some already have. According to the New York Times report, several Democrats declined the President’s invitation to attend the nomination announcement. Mr. Trump went on to say, “I only hope that both Democrats and Republicans can come together for once, for the good of the country.”
