A new nonprofit organization is calling on women to embrace their “power to” shape their lives and careers to eliminate the pervasive pay and leadership gaps.
Take The Lead’s mission is to prepare, develop, inspire and propel women to take their fair and equal share of leadership positions across all sectors by 2025.
The organization will hold its Take The Lead Challenge Launch Event on February 19 at 8 pm EST, 7 pm CST, 6 pm MST, or 5 pm PST at Arizona State University. You don’t have to be in Arizona to attend this sold-out event. Along FIU’s National Organization for Women (N.O.W.) the Women’s Caucus of FIU College Democrats and Her Campus FIU, we will be providing a safe space for FIU collegiettes to engage in this viewing in GC305 at 8 p.m on the designated date.
The challenge theme calls women, men, and organizations to action and gives women the tools they need to succeed in work, civic leadership, and personal life.
Women earn 77 cents to men’s dollar and make up half the workforce but only 18 percent of top leadership positions. The reasons have been researched ad infinitum. Take The Lead is shifts the focus from problems to solutions.
“It’s up to women to change the conversation for three reasons,” said Take The Lead President and Co-founder Gloria Feldt, also author of No Excuses: 9 Ways Women Can Change How We Think About Power. “The business case is clear: more women in leadership results in companies making more money. Leadership parity is the fair and just thing to do. And today’s technology enables changes in how we work and network. Women have the power to do this, IF they use it.”
The event will feature such thought leaders as Feldt and Facebook COO and Lean In author Sheryl Sandberg. A powerhouse women’s media panel cohosted with the Women’s Media Center will be moderated by MSNBC’s Karen Finney. Attendees will receive a surprise takeaway to help them negotiate their way to success in their lives and careers. (Hint: It’s not a mug or a signed book. It’s something substantial and career-changing.)
“When women start from a position of believing we deserve parity, we can create a new narrative based on the possibilities to shape a future where all women and men can thrive,” Feldt said.
We will be providing free food and refreshments! We hope to see you there!
