Universities Close Due to Coronavirus

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FIU chapter.

Needless to say, the last month has been pretty hectic for everyone. However, as a college student, I feel as if the COVID-19 virus has affected our lives in so many ways imaginable. Currently, I am a sophomore at Florida International University; but, unfortunately, our dean decided to continue the rest of our spring semester online along with several other universities in Florida including the University of Florida, University of Central Florida, and Florida State University.

Now you’re probably thinking, “what’s the big deal closing college campuses? just continue your semester online, it’s safer for everyone.”. Well, yes, I agree, but there are numerous downsides. First and foremost, a lot of students don’t learn as well online. It requires a larger amount of discipline that isn’t needed for in-person lectures. That’s why STEM majors will definitely suffer along with other students because a lot of their courses require precise attention and an environment that caters focus. This includes at home which is difficult due to technical difficulties that could occur or the distractions in and out of your control.

Moreover, being a part of Greek life has definitely enhanced my college experience. However, due to the virus, several of our philanthropy events that were planned on and off-campus had to be postponed. Other events like formal and pageants also needed to be canceled as well as our weekly meetings. As Greek life makes up almost the majority of our student population, it poses a con.

Although this entire situation has been difficult, frustrating, and draining, we have no other option but to obey the school’s orders. After all, it will help speed up the quarantine process, and sooner than later we can go back to our routines.
