As many of you may already know, Greek life at FIU has been under a microscope due to the problems that have arisen within certain organizations. Not only have there been problems on our campus, but more serious events have happened up north. Due to the FSU Pi Kappa Phi pledge, Andrew Coffey, passing away as a result of a hazing incident, President Thrasher of Florida State University made the executive decision to suspend all Greek Life on campus. The Florida Board of Governors put its full support behind Thrasher and suggested that other universities might have to do the same.
Although others may be considering to follow Thrasher’s actions, President Rosenberg has decided not to do so until all possible options have been exhausted. He has been keeping the community updated through emails and continues to stay on top of the matter at hand.  Rosenberg is holding all Greek organizations accountable for upholding the values of their letters as well as the university.
Being a part of a sorority myself, it pains me to see how people only think negatively of Greek life because of everything that has happened. I have an indescribable love for the letters I wear across my chest and the philanthropies that I raise money and awareness for. Of course, the only thing that people focus on are the mistakes that happen within the Greek community. I do not agree with the certain events that have happened on campus but I do not think that it is wise to shut down all other organizations because of those events. Doing so would result in the philanthropies that benefit from Greek life not receiving the money and support needed to prosper. Rosenberg has done everything possible to make sure that it does not come down to this. Greek life is a great networking tool, helps you learn more about yourself, and allows you to be a part of something bigger than you could have possibly imagined.Â
