4 Ways To Celebrate Galentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Fordham chapter.

So, as we all know, Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. There is always so much hype around V-Day, and whether you are in a relationship or not, you cannot escape the heart-shaped, well… everything. Why let this get you down though? A whole day dedicated to chocolate, who am I to say no?

Like Hallmark, Amy Poehler’s hilarious character on Parks and Recreation, Leslie Knope, is the queen of fake holidays. Her favorite, though, is Galentine’s Day. What’s Galentine’s Day, you ask?

First mentioned in season two of Parks and Recreation, Galentine’s day is the ever-important pre-Valentine’s Day celebration with your favorite ladies. It’s about appreciating each other’s company without the presence of any boyfriends, husbands, etc. Here are some ideas for how to treat ‘yo self with your girls this February 13th!

1. Dinner and a movie – A classic date-night transformed to suit your Galentine’s Day needs. Hit up Arthur Ave for some of the best traditional Italian food in NYC. Then, head into town to catch Fifty Shades of Grey to watch all of your fantasies play out on the big screen.

2. Dessert Potluck – Call up the girls and have a dessert potluck! Have everyone bring a different dessert and binge eat all the sugar you could ever dream of. Check out this Pinterest board for dessert inspo.

3. Secret Cupid – While you’re in a dessert-coma, hold a “Secret Cupid” gift exchange. Prepare it in advance like you would a Secret Santa swap, and have each person bring a small gift for their designated secret admirer. It’s an inexpensive way to celebrate your friendship and let someone know that even if they don’t have a S.O., they have you!

4. Hit The Bars (Did I even have to say it?) – Obviously the best way to end a solid Galentine’s Day is by dressing up and hitting the scene with your squad. Put on that dress, toss back a few and dance the night away. With all of your girls by your side there’s nothing that can stop you!

With these ideas in mind, spend some quality time with your girls and have the best Galentine’s Day ever!
