Studying abroad is an incredible opportunity to step out of your comfort zone and see the world. Â But preparing to move to a foreign country for an entire semester can be a bit intimidating. Â So if you’re about to study abroad and have no idea what to expect, we’ve got you covered with these 8 tips.
Â
-
Study up: If you don’t speak the language of your host country, don’t panic.  Chances are most people you’re studying with don’t either.  But it’s important to have some basic knowledge.  Please. Thank you. Bathroom. Taxi. White or red. These are all essentials for surviving abroad.
-
Save your money: Make as much money as you can before your go, but don’t spend any of it!  You will regret every dollar, euro, pound, or peso you don’t spend abroad.  That being said, know your exchange rates.  Nothing is more painful and confusing than taking 100 euros out at the ATM and finding that 130 dollars are gone.
-
See as much of the world as you can – This is the one time in your life when you can literally travel to a different foreign country every weekend.  See other countries, try the food, and learn a little bit of the language.  There is so much beyond what we know now, so take advantage of this opportunity.  BUT, don’t get caught up in the traveling.  Your host country is just as wonderful as the others, I promise. Take the time to really live there.
-
Pack wisely – Your experiences are way more important than any outfit you’ll wear.  You basically live out of a suitcase for the entire semester, and sometimes you will find yourself literally living out of a backpack, so pack light.  Definitely pack clothing that can transition over to different seasons, and make sure to leave room in your suitcase for all the cool things you’ll buy abroad. The only thing worse than exchange rates are the fees the airport will charge you for an overweight suitcase.
-
Be prepared for the ups and downs – Being abroad will be the greatest and most memorable time in your life, but it’s important to remember that its still real life.  You might get homesick, or frustrated with the language and cultural differences, but don’t let that get in the way of all the good times you’ll have.  Grab a gelato and shake it off.
-
Take risks – Meet new people, try new foods, don’t be embarrassed to use a new language, get involved in the local community, go on that last minute trip to Paris.  Say yes to (almost) everything. (Just be smart about it, alright?)
-
There are no diets abroad – It’s as simple as this: all food is good food.  Just eat the pizza, ok?
-
BE THERE – You get one shot at this so make the most of it. Â Take lots of pictures but know when to put the phone down. Â Enjoy every moment with everyone you meet. Â Make new friends and be fearless. Â Go on adventures. Get lost in a new place because you decided to explore. Â Fall in love with every city you visit. Â Give in to your wanderlust, and just be there.
