5 Things to do in New York City for Under $5

With New York City less than an hour away (via subway or car) from Fordham’s Rose Hill Campus, experiencing this truly unique city is a cinch for students. There’s so much to love about this exhilarating city including nightlife, food, and scenery. However, the prices aren’t right for everyone, the city is also known for being expensive. But there are great ways to explore without breaking the bank. Here are five fun things to do in New York City for under $5.

1 Knitting Factory’s Comedy Show  The Knitting Factor is a popular multipurpose venue in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Every Sunday at 9 p.m. they put on a free comedy show. You can’t beat that price. Doors open at 6 pm; be sure to arrive early it will get crowded.  -Location: 361 Metropolitan Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11211 -Hours: Doors open at 6 pm and the event starts at 9 p.m.

2 Bingo at Le Poisson Rouge This multimedia cabaret offers bingo nights on Fridays and Saturdays starting at 7:30 pm. The entrance is free and bingo boards are $2. The event is hosted by drag queen Linda Simpson. If you win you could go home with knick-knacks or money but even those who don’t win are sure to have fun.  -Location: 158 Bleecker St, New York, NY 10012 -Hours: Fridays and Saturdays starting at 7:30 p.m.

3 Economy Candy Economy Candy is known for their huge selection of candy for small prices. They sell everything from licorice to astronaut ice cream. The second you walk in you’ll notice the variety of colorful candy overflowing the shelves.  -Location: 108 Rivington St, New York, NY 10002 -Hours: 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday-Monday

4 Take the tram to Roosevelt Island This aerial tram offers an incredible view of the east river and the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge. It’s especially beautiful at night when the bridge is lit up or during sunset. Once the tram reaches the island there’s tons to do. You can take the bus to Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms State Park, the lighthouse, and Eleanor’s Pier. It’s a great place to have a picnic if the weather permits. It’s open from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. every day and it costs $2.75 one way, so $5.50 round trip. -Location: E 60th St, New York, NY 10022 -Hours: 6 a.m.- 1 a.m. Monday-Sunday

5 Get a slice at Joe’s pizza Joe’s Pizza is a classic NYC staple. This establishment has been serving one of New York’s famous delicacies; pizza, for 45 years. It’s beloved by many celebrities and their autographed photos with the owner and staff cover the walls. It’s also frequented by Spiderman fans as it’s where Peter Parker worked in Spiderman Two from 2004.
