Healthy Snacks that Don’t Break the Bank!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Fordham chapter.

Healthy food can be flavorful and delicious, but it often takes extra time and money. However, it is possible to enjoy a healthy and fulfilling diet on a budget even with a hectic schedule. I have compiled a list of some of my favorite and easiest meals. Try out these combos or use them as inspiration using the ingredients your already have.

Collegiate Crepes

Got a terrible sweet tooth like me? Try this delicious and nutritious combo: Spread Nutella on whole wheat toast and top it with ripe juicy raspberries. This snack has a great mixture of complex carbohydrates and protein. The Nutella always satisfies my chocolate cravings and the raspberries add a tart and delicious twist.

Tuna Melt Crackers

This recipe was one of my favorites when I was a kid. Scoop tablespoons of tuna on Triscuits and sprinkle some grated cheddar cheese on top. Throw a tray of them into the oven until the cheese melts and the crackers have a brown tinge. Voila! Tuna melt crackers are quick, simple, and full of flavor.

Hummus Wraps

Go Mediterranean! Spread your favorite variety of hummus onto warm pita or naan. Add crispy lettuce leaves for a refreshing low-cal crunch. Looking for a more fulfilling meal? Add turkey cold cuts to the mix to round out the wrap.

Bagel Brunch

A bagel with cream cheese is classic, but give it a twist by throwing avocado and feta into the mix! Avocado adds some monounsaturated fats (goodbye love handles!) without changing the texture, while the feta adds a complimentary zing.

PB&B

This one is similar to the Nutella and raspberry crepe in concept, but very different in flavor. Spread some peanut butter on toast and add chopped banana chunks. It is another excellent fusion of protein and complex carbohydrates that doesn’t skimp on flavor. Just be sure to have a beverage on hand to wash it down!

Lettuce Tacos

Craving Mexican? Add some taco spices to ground beef, ground turkey, or chicken and cook it in a skillet. Essentially, you are making tacos, but instead of crunchy or soft shells, use crispy lettuce leaves as your shell. Add cheese, tomatoes, onion, cilantro, or whatever other toppings you enjoy. You can indulge in the spicy and feisty Mexican flavors without regret! The lettuce is a refreshing contrast to the warm meat and actually emphasizes its delicious flavor rather than distracting from it.

So there you have it! It is possible to enjoy a healthy diet without sacrificing flavor, time, or your budget. So try these out and see what you like!
