Almost everyone picked up a new hobby during the COVID lockdowns of March 2020. For some, it was going on daily walks. For others, it was cooking or having movie marathons. For me, it was Peloton. Because the gyms were closed, my family slowly started to build our own at-home gym, using the Peloton app for equipment-free workouts like yoga, running outside, HIIT cardio classes, and stretching. As the pandemic lengthened, we began to question when gyms would open again. We invested in a treadmill and a spinning bike. Although neither were the official Peloton brand, it was easy to take Peloton cycling and treadmill classes regardless.

Peloton slowly turned into a daily ritual. My family would discuss which classes we took over dinner. We would fight over who would use the at-home gym in the basement at which time. We even sometimes took classes together! Though I had always thought that working out at the gym was better, Peloton changed my views on at-home fitness completely with their large variety of classes. Even more so, their instructors made me look forward to working out – it almost felt like we were friends as I listened to them tell stories about their day or discuss current events during classes. The instructor of the class you take impacts your experience more than I had ever thought it could. If you are thinking of trying a Peloton workout, read on to find out which instructor you might like best.

jess sims

If you are looking for a workout to leave you panting on the floor, take a strength or running class with Jess Sims. Her workouts are the perfect mix of grueling and gratifying. Even as a competitive gymnast, I have never had an instructor push me to my limits so intensely. Jess makes you want to do your absolute best. She uses the beat of the music and her own motivational stories to urge you to push yourself even when you feel like you cannot push yourself any harder. After her classes, I often find myself with chills and soaring endorphins – it almost feels like a spiritual experience!

olivia amato

Working out with Olivia feels like working out alongside your best friend. Olivia’s workouts are no joke, but she is so peppy and friendly that you (almost) forget to be mad about how hard her classes are. My favorite classes to take with Olivia are walking classes and core strength classes. She is constantly cheering you on and sharing funny, light-hearted stories about her day-to-day life. She also always has amazing outfits! Olivia’s classes are perfect for those who dislike working out alone and want to feel a sense of friendship and community.

chase tucker

Chase Tucker’s workouts are calm and organized, just like his personality. Chase is extremely motivational and often shares his strategies and tips for maintaining a healthy mindset and improving yourself (in and out of fitness) during class. Chase’s classes always entail a slow and steady burn, allowing you to keep yourself calm while still challenging yourself. If you enjoy strength workouts with a side of advice and wisdom, try one of Chase’s classes.

kendall toole

Kendall Toole is one of the fiercest individuals I have ever met (or, virtually met?). Her shadowboxing classes on Peloton are extremely cathartic and therapeutic. She complements the challenging workouts with inspirational messages about believing in yourself and finding your inner strength. Kendall also has a large Instagram following (@fitxkendall) where she often goes live to discuss her own personal challenges with her followers. Kendall is the CEO of “keeping it real” and will leave you feeling more empowered than ever after her workouts.

rebecca kennedy

Rebecca Kennedy, like myself, is a former competitive gymnast. Accordingly, her workouts are full of complicated movements and contortions that might take a second to figure out. However, she is extremely clear in explaining the purpose behind the exercises she chooses and how they will benefit your body in the long run. Rebecca is also extremely upbeat and intense, frequently pausing her classes for a quick dance party.

Peloton is an amazing tool for at-home workouts. All of the instructors are friendly and incredibly intelligent about exercise. If you’re considering trying it out, you really can’t go wrong!
