This year I am spending Easter Break in Rhode Island with my boyfriend and his family. On our first day here, we decided to visit the Newport Mansions in – you guessed it – Newport, Rhode Island. The drive down was absolutely beautiful because there are so many places where you can see the water, and it was a gorgeous sunny day. The Mansions were the Vanderbilt family’s summer homes circa 1900, and they are incredible. We also did the Cliff Walk which allows you to walk along the water in Newport while you’re going from mansion to mansion. Enjoy!
Before reaching the first mansion, we walked along the cliffs and saw some breathtaking views of the water. It was very ~romantic~.
The first mansion, The Breakers, was a summer home to Cornelius Vanderbilt II, his wife Alice Gwynne Vanderbilt, and their seven children in the late 1800s. Unfortunately we weren’t allowed to take pictures of the inside, but you can probably guess how ornate and fancy it was from this photo.
Just some casual summer home shopping *hair flip*
I was OBSESSED with this gazebo that appears along the Cliff Walk. I can only imagine how many marriage proposals have happened there.
The second palace house we visited was called Marble House. As you might imagine, its name came from its interior that is almost completely made of marble. If you want an idea of how rich the Vanderbilts were, they only spent SIX WEEKS a year at this beautiful summer home…because they split the rest of their time among their various other huge mansions.
We couldn’t have asked for a better day to visit the Newport Mansions in Rhode Island. The sun was shining, the water was sparkling, and the Cliff Walk was so relaxing (even though I had to climb over a few rocks.)
If you’re in Rhode Island this break or during the summer, check out the Newport Mansions and the Cliff Walk. You won’t regret it!
