Shannon Harman, GSB ’17

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Fordham chapter.

Name: Shannon Harman

School and Year: GSB ‘17

Major: Applied Accounting & Finance

Campus Involvement: CEO of Smart Woman Securities and Real Estate Analyst for Gabelli’s Student Management Investment Fund (Author’s note: 24 of Gabelli’s best students are picked every year to manage $1.3 million of Fordham’s money!)

1) What is the goal of Smart Women Securities? The goal of SWS is to educate women in personal finance. During the semester, a different speaker comes in every week. They’ll talk about everything finance from how to invest to how to do a balance sheet to how to analyze companies. During the spring, it’s more career-oriented and more fun. Our speakers will talk about their careers and how they got to their positions that they’re working now.

2) What internships have you had during your college career? I interned at Redbook my sophomore year. The summer before my junior year, I interned at a tax firm. It was a good experience, but I learned that I didn’t like tax at all. And the summer before my senior year, I got an internship with JPMorgan Chase & Co. I was given a job offer at the end of my internship period, which I’ve accepted. I’ll start working at JPMorgan full-time after graduation.

3) What advice do you have for a girl who is pursuing a field that is dominated by men? Don’t let it hold you back. If you think there’s a barrier, you’ll be even more stressed about it. Be as aggressive as everyone else. And don’t be afraid to reach out because your network is your networth. Don’t let those preconceived notions hold you back, and don’t ever think you can’t do anything.

4) How was your study abroad experience? I went during my junior year, and I loved it. London was so much fun, and I was able to go to Budapest with my family, which was awesome. But my most thrilling trip was to Morocco with my friends. My family didn’t know I was going, and really didn’t want me to. But I was able to explore the main city, camp out in the desert, and ride a camel.

5) How do you feel about being a senior? It’s bittersweet. I feel like I’m ready, but I know it’s going to be really difficult to leave. I’m hoping I’ll be totally ready to leave in May.

6) If you could pick 3 celebrities to be apart of your entourage, who would they be? Jennifer Lawrence, Amy Schumer, and Jake Gyllenhaal.

7) What is your favorite thing to do in your free time? I really like to travel. I went to Thailand with my sister last spring break, and it’s one of my favorite memories. Over the summer, I went to Nashville and Georgia, and for Thanksgiving, I’ll be going to Antigua.

8) What have you not done during your time at Fordham, that you still wish to do? I really want to see Wicked on Broadway. I’m going to wait for my mom to come and take me.
