Sick as a Dog: Surviving Cold and Flu Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Fordham chapter.

It all starts when you wake up one morning with a slightly sore throat.

I, of course, always think nothing of it. I sleep next to the window, maybe it’s dry? Sometimes it gets hoarse from my talking all day and night.

Not this time.

Given a few days to just be, my sore throat turned into the raging madness that is, well, I was never really told what it was. Congestion, headaches, hot/cold flashes. You name it, I had it. It was more than the common cold. My parents, both in the medical field, even got worried when I called to ask them if I should go to the Health Center. And that’s saying a lot. They gave me anti-biotics and are still monitoring me. So, as of right now, I’m on the mend. Still not fully better, but getting there.

With the recent outbreak of mumps on campus and the cold/flu raging throughout the dorms, how can a  girl stay healthy? Here’s a few tips.

1. WASH YOUR HANDS. I cannot stress this enough. You don’t know what’s been where.

2. Eat healthy. I know Puglsey’s sounds so good right about now, with midterms rolling through, but resist. Eat some fruit instead. The extra vitamins will help your body fight off any unwanted sickness.

3. Drink water. Plain and simple. Staying hydrated will flush the sickness out of your system.

4. Exercise. Like drinking water, the sweat will help get the viruses out of your body, plus you can stay in shape (and admire the cute guys) in the gym!

5. Nap/Rest. Don’t overexert yourself. Exhaustion and stress will make your body weaker, which makes you more susceptible to getting sick.

6. If you feel like you may have something more serious than a cold, go to the Health Center (make sure you make an appointment though). They’ll know what to look for and how to treat you sickness.

Good luck and here’s to staying healthy!
