It’s nightfall and you’re walking towards your dorm alone like you’ve done so many times before. Only this time it’s different. It’s quiet. That is, until you hear footsteps in the distance. Then you see the outline of a person behind you, watching you. Immediately you think of how truly dark this night can get…

College is meant to be a safe environment to learn and grow as a student and as a person, but it can also be a dangerous place if certain precautions aren’t taken. This goes for life outside of college as well. However, this doesn’t mean that anyone has to live life in fear. It’s important to be aware of your surroundings and to realize that you can take steps to ensure your safety. Some of these steps can include:

1. Consider taking a self-defense class.

Many college campuses offer self-defense classes for students. It really wouldn’t hurt to learn a few moves. It could even be fun!

2. Check in with your family and friends.

Your family and friends don’t need to know where you are every second of the day, but it is a good idea to let someone know where you are, especially if you’re deviating from your normal routine. Let someone know when you expect to get back from somewhere.

3. Program your Campus Police number into your phone.

Usually students are encouraged to program this number into their phones at Orientation. In case you haven’t, it’s a good idea to do so.

4. Utilize your Campus Escort Service.

Campus police exists to ensure the safety of students so why not utilize the campus escort system. If you’re ever in a situation where you don’t feel safe or even comfortable walking alone at night by yourself. Use this resource!

5. Have other Safety Measures on hand.

Non-lethal safety measures such as pepper spray, whistles, and maybe even an alarm are a few convenient and portable safety measures that may be helpful in an emergency.

6. Use your social media privacy settings.

We all love social media. It’s a great way to keep in touch with friends and family instantly. Just be aware that if you have a public account, anyone and everyone can see your location. You might want to consider adjusting the privacy settings on your social media accounts so that only those you know and trust know your whereabouts.
