Whether you are a first-year student looking to meet new people or a third-year student in need of a brain break, Florida State University (FSU) has an endless list of fun and exciting events that take place on campus. These range from live concerts to Halloween-themed festivals to celebrations of countries from around the world! I attended many of these events during my first year at FSU and continue to today. Thus, I have compiled a list of FSU on-campus events I highly recommend for students.
- Club downunder Events
-
Club Downunder is a popular organization run by FSU students. They are known for their various events that take place almost every week and during special times of the semester. Recently, their venue opened in the new Oglesby Student Union, and it is where these events are usually held.
Club Downunder hosts events on their own or with other student organizations such as the Black Student Union (BSU) or the Asian American Student Union (AASU). They include fun activities such as painting, tie-dying, trivia and karaoke, food and drinks, markets where students can shop from business vendors and much more. They also collaborate with music artists to hold concerts in their venue. Artists such as Laundry Day, Daddy’s Beemer and Cannibal Kids have performed there in the past. Club Downunder is a great way to make and spend time with friends, partake in different activities, and show your support for the extracurricular aspect of FSU in general.
- Askew Student Life Cinema Film Showings
-
The Askew Student Life Cinema is a movie theater located in the Askew Student Life Center (ASLC). Run by FSU students, the theater shows popular and classic films. It is open to all students and even has a concession area where food and drinks can be purchased before a film begins.
The students behind the Askew Student Life Cinema collaborate with other student organizations, host trivia sessions and hand out merchandise for some of their film showings. Some of the films shown in the past are Heathers, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Final Destination, 10 Things I Hate About You, Candyman, Pearl and much more. If you are an avid film lover or simply searching for something to do with friends, head to the Askew Student Life Cinema!
- The Flying High Circus
-
The Flying High Circus is FSU’s circus group made up of talented students under the university. Their performances take place in both the fall and spring semester and are praised for the astonishing routines they present. The group is well known for the creative themes they add to these performances, such as outer space. During the famous FSU Family Weekend, both students and their families can experience the magic of the Flying High Circus, as shows also take place then. The circus as a whole is a very entertaining event to attend while on campus. If you have the chance, buy your ticket for their next show!
- International Coffee Hour
-
International Coffee Hour is an event that is hosted every Friday from 5-6:30 p.m. at the Global and Multicultural Engagement building (“The Globe”). Students have the chance to enjoy a dish from a specific country each week along with a fresh cup of coffee, and also engage with fellow students of different cultures. One week they can enjoy an authentic South Asian samosa and the next a French crepe! It is a way to learn about various countries through food and befriend students who come from all kinds of cultural backgrounds.
- Market Wednesday
-
Market Wednesday is an event that takes place every Wednesday from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. along Legacy Walk near the Oglesby Student Union. Vendors gather in that area to promote their businesses with colorful tables, displays and products that students can buy. These products range from jewelry to stickers to pop culture merchandise. Students themselves can promote their businesses as well. If you have time in between classes or are looking to buy products for your dorm or apartment, Market Wednesday is your pal!
On the FSU campus, there is an activity for everyone to enjoy. They are perfect ways for students to explore what the Seminole family has to offer, find their passions, and form great friendships. A concert hosted by Club Downunder or International Coffee Hour are great places to begin. To find out more about these events, check the FSU Events Calendar here.
