4 Tips for Creating Healthy Habits During Finals Week at FSU

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

Coming back to Tallahassee after getting a few days away and being thrown into the stress of projects, exams, and studying is something I will never get used to. Thanksgiving break is a small taste of the future break yet to come, and by the time I come back, I simply want to be done with the semester. I’m sure this feeling is relatable. Especially as an out-of-state student, going home for a few days was chaotic enough within itself. In an effort to make time to see my hometown friends and spend time with family, I pushed all my work to the side.

Even though we’ve only been back briefly, this final stretch to winter break feels like an eternity. Don’t get me started on the never-ending work, too. Almost every professor is “out to get me,” assigning things left and right. In addition to other events for organizations in and outside of Florida State University, all of this can feel incredibly overwhelming. I’m here to tell you how I’ll get through it.

1. Organization is Key

When my classes are piling on each other, it’s essential to take a step back and make sure I understand what’s going on. My best method for remaining on top of things is creating a weekly to-do list. Whether it’s electronic or on paper (mine is literally in my phone’s Notes app), having a to-do list that’s easy to access can help me calm down.

By separating the list by classes, organizations, and personal life categories, I can see an overview of my week quickly. I will often write down the assignments I have to do under each category and add the date to the side. Creating these lists allows me to see everything out in front of me. While that may be overwhelming to some people, it helps reassure me that I’m not missing anything. Finding a style of organizing your assignments and tasks that works for you can be beneficial to staying on top of everything this final season.

2. Prioritize Movement

Even with the increasing workload as the semester comes to a close, I believe it’s crucial to find time for yourself. When I get really overwhelmed with my tasks, I often break up what I need to do and allow myself time to get away from the workload. If there are a lot of assignments or busy work, try setting goals for yourself to work toward. Once you finish two or three small tasks, give yourself the chance to go outside. After going through your schedule and assignments, you can determine a time in the day that works best for you to go to the gym. With the recent cooler weather, I love a good hot girl walk or even a run around campus to wake me up.

Movement doesn’t have to be just lifting or running, either. I’ve been a dancer all my life, so lifting was never really something I was interested in until recently. Work with your own interests and passions. Whether it’s dance, yoga, pilates, or simply walking, giving myself time during the day to let my mind wander is very beneficial to my physical and mental health. It’s a productive break from all the academics that have taken over my life.

3. Sweet Treats and Study Spots

I can do my work more efficiently with something to look forward to. Rewarding myself with the opportunity to go to RedEye Coffee to get work done will always make my day. Something about switching up the area I work in and grabbing a coffee or tea to accompany my studies automatically lifts my spirits. This doesn’t have to be strictly off-campus, either! Making homemade coffee, desserts, or other sweet treats and then taking it to study on Landis could be more accessible and will save you money, too!

Changing the environment I surround myself in, such as breaking up where I work and socialize, can also be very beneficial. Understanding where and how I work best can be crucial to staying on top of everything. Making it a habit that I need to focus and work when I get to a specific location in the Paul Dirac Science Library or Dodd Hall flips a switch in my brain and suddenly, I’m motivated. I’ve found places around campus where I enjoy studying and often go when I need to be productive. Similarly, I know locations such as my apartment and sorority house, where I can socialize with others, might not be the most effective study spots.

4. Socialization Is Good for the Soul

In relation to socialization, allow yourself time to be with people. I know as things start adding up, I feel like I barely have time to do anything. However, I know that seeing other people, even if it’s simply between classes or grabbing dinner together, has helped me find peace amidst the chaos. After all, we are still in college, and making memories with the people you love over these few years is essential.

Make sure to continue to stay up to date with the events occurring on campus. Bring some friends with you and have a good time! Many organizations, such as Club Downunder, often host winter-themed events that you won’t want to miss. Using NoleCentral to find registered student organizations that spark your interest can also offer a relaxing opportunity for you to socialize and become involved with something you’re passionate about.

Trust me, I know how overwhelming it can all be leading up to these last few weeks before winter break. Finding a balance between academics, social events, and prioritizing yourself takes time. All of it cannot be solved overnight, but implementing a few small changes in your life can show improvement over time. Looking forward to winter break has been a prime motivator for me to excel to the best of my abilities. I hope my experience can provide insight into how my healthy habits prevent me from being as stressed as I used to be this finals season.
