I have been spending a lot more time scrolling through TikTok these days in quarantine. I have seen a surplus of crafty videos on my page and I am not mad about it at all. A large amount of time at home means people are creating and crafting amazing projects! I love the crafty side of TikTok and wanted to share some simple DIY projects that will get your creativity flowing.

Resin Tray Art

My sister and I found this trend going around TikTok where you make a personalized tray with just a few simple supplies and steps! For our project, we bought all of our supplies from Michaels and Amazon. We gathered simple wooden trays, resin, paint, glitter and ordered pictures from CVS. First, we painted the wooden trays in the color of our choice. Then we arranged our pictures. We both tried to go for a certain look or aesthetic. My sister went with a color scheme like pink and bought pink paint and photos with a pink tint to them. After you arrange your photos, mix your resin with the glitter and pour it so that it covers the bottom of the tray evenly. It takes a while for the resin to harden so leave it alone for about a day and it will turn out fine. Lookup “resin tray art” on TikTok for some examples or a tutorial.

Embroidered Shirt

I have seen many TikTok embroidery projects that look like interesting projects. I have been doing embroidery for years and I can tell you right now that it is so much easier than it looks. I have been working on embroidering a plain shirt I bought from a craft store. If you want to try embroidering a shirt, you need a few materials. Gather a plain shirt, a hoop to pull the fabric tight, various embroidery threads and embroidery needles. I would definitely suggest drawing out what you want to be embroidered onto the fabric with a washable marker or pencil before you start. If you cannot draw, like me, I have seen people on TikTok print out a picture on paper and then trace it onto the fabric. Look up “embroidery” on TikTok for more ideas on what you could embroider onto your clothing.

Bleached Denim

Another trend that seems to have gained popularity over the past few months is bleaching your denim. I’ve found so many cute styles and ideas people have come up with off of this idea. All you need for this DIY is any denim you want to update and a bottle of bleach. One idea I saw was to bleach a star pattern into a pair of jeans. Another idea someone had on TikTok was to bleach one pant leg of shorts to create a cool contrast between different colors of denim. If you try out that idea, make sure to cover the leg you do not want bleached. I just bought a pair of jeans that I am going to try to ombre bleach. Look up “bleached jeans” on TikTok for some more ideas or a tutorial.

Watercolor Marker Abstract

I found this really cool watercolor technique on TikTok that turns out pretty well and does not even need any paint! All you need is a sheet of watercolor paper, a plastic baggie and different colored markers. Color the baggie with markers in any way that you wish for the colors to show up on your paper. Flick water droplets onto the baggie to give your design that watercolor look. Place the colored side of the baggie face-down on the paper and rub it into the paper. It leaves a pretty abstract watercolor design backdrop for calligraphy or bullet journaling. Lookup “watercolor” in the hashtags on TikTok to see a tutorial.

I hope you are feeling inspired during these long days to stay creative. We have this time so we should make the most of it and do what we can to entertain ourselves. The crafts above are all trends on TikTok so if you look up keywords in the hashtags you can find many videos if you need a visual walk-through.
