This past December, the movie/musical The Greatest Showman was released. Now, I don’t know about you, but I love a good musical (especially when it includes Zac Efron). This isn’t just another musical, though, it loosely follows the story of showman P.T. Barnum, of the infamous Barnum & Bailey circus. Two of my favorite things, musicals and circuses, also happen to be the basis of the movie. Let me show you the magic of this film with the top five greatest things about it.
1. The All-Star Cast
This film is star-studded! With Barnum being played by Hugh Jackman and supporting characters portrayed by Michelle Williams, Zac Efron and Zendaya, this is not a movie to be missed! It was quite a “show” to see Hugh Jackman play a heartfelt businessman/showman when we are so accustomed to him as the grisly Wolverine, but it’s not a disappointment. Also, who can say no two hours of Zac Efron?
Fun Fact: Zendaya did all of the trapeze acts in the movie on her own!
2. The Amazing Soundtrack
The entire soundtrack in this movie is phenomenal, and I’ve probably played it over about 100 times. If I were to suggest one song, it would be “This is Me,” a love yourself anthem about expressing yourself and accepting yourself for who you are. Sung by Keala Settle (the bearded lady), you can’t help but feel inspired! It also won a Golden Globe Award for best original song. If that doesn’t tell you something, what does?

3. One Word: Circus
I don’t know about you, but I’ve loved the circus since I was little (and thought about running away with it many times). The movie follows the life of P.T. Barnum, and along with it, you get to see all the “freaks,” including the Bearded Lady, the Dog Faced Boy and the World’s Tallest Man! Along with amazing animals and trapeze, it really is the greatest show.
4. It Carries a Powerful Message
As seen through the music and the cast, this film showcases diversity and self-acceptance. The movie not only follows Barnum’s life story but also highlights each of the freaks in their own way. Barnum brings them to this life of acceptance when they live in a world of oppression. Just because they’re different doesn’t mean they can’t belong.
5. The Cinematography
The imagery in this movie is beautiful. Set in the 1800s, it realistically captures the time period, but that’s not even the best part. The vibrant colors and overall setting are beautiful. Not to mention the costumes, makeup and mise-en-scene. Something catches your eye in every scene.
Now that I’ve given you the five greatest things about The Greatest Showman, I hope it encourages you to go see it for yourself. If you love the circus, or anything fun and musical, I’m sure you’ll like this. On top of everything else, it’s an original musical that took seven years to make! To get your tickets now, click here!Â
