*Spoilers Ahead*
After a two-month break that left fans in suspense, TGIT (Thank God It’s Thursday) has returned to ABC following its midseason break. For those of you unfamiliar with TGIT, this is a 3-hour block of television shows produced by Shonda Rhimes, that garner millions of viewers every week. For years, America has tuned in to watch the storylines of Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and How to Get Away with Murder unfold. Shondaland, Rhimes’ production company, is known for its shocking plot twists, and I doubt that 2018 will disappoint. Here are some of the reasons why you should tune in to the current seasons of TGIT.
1. It’s the final season of Scandal.
For the past six years, we have followed Kerry Washington’s Olivia Pope as she fixed scandalous situations in D.C., while also juggling her own complex personal life. Over the course of seven seasons, the characters of Scandal have developed beyond their initial storylines; as an audience, we have gained more information about their pasts and watched them flourish into multifaceted figures. Olivia has given up OPA and is now the Chief of Staff to Mellie, who became president following a controversial election. Fitz is working on a foundation following the end of his presidency. Jake is married, the director of the NSA, and still working under B613, which is now also controlled by Olivia. Currently, Olivia is on somewhat of a power trip, which has caused major tension between herself and those surrounding her. Check out the final half of the season to find out what the end looks like for the gladiators and whether Olivia puts on her white hat once more.
2. Is Quinn still alive?
In the final minutes of the mid-season finale, Olivia and her father, Eli were in a standoff over his demand that Olivia give him back control over B613 and his dinosaur bones. Eli stated that he would kill Quinn, whom he had recently kidnapped, if Olivia did not give him what he wanted. Once the deadline was reached, he went into the basement, viewers heard screams possibly belonging to Quinn followed by a gunshot, and then Eli returned with blood on his shirt. This concluded the episode, so viewers are unsure if Eli was bluffing or not. Regardless, this is a major moment in Scandal. It would not be a surprise if Quinn were dead because even if you’re a main character on a Shondaland show, you’re not guaranteed to make it to the next episode.
This all comes after Quinn has spent the entire season preparing for her future. She is expecting a child with former B613 assassin, Charlie, and the two were supposed to be wed before she was kidnapped by Eli. She currently runs Quinn Perkins and Associates, formerly known as Olivia Pope and Associates. It will be interesting to see what is in store for Quinn if she does survive, especially considering that she is at odds with Olivia because she knows that Olivia is responsible for the assassination of the Bahraini president.
3. Jo’s secret past comes to light.
Jo and Karev have been a strong couple on Grey’s Anatomy for the past couple seasons now. They have grown so strong, in fact, that Karev proposed to her. After a huge, violent misunderstanding occurs that causes she and Karev to temporarily separate, Jo reveals that she cannot marry Karev because she is already married. She was involved in a physically abusive marriage, which she fled, but she cannot send her husband divorce papers because then he would be able to track her down. In the final episode before the break, Jo runs into her husband who finds her in Seattle. We get a glimpse of the horror in her eyes and then the screen goes black. With the return of Grey’s Anatomy, we will hopefully pick up right where we left off. This situation can go a variety of ways, but I have faith that the writers will craft a powerful story that women who have been in similar situations can relate to.
4. What will happen to the Keating Four?
There is never a dull moment in How to Get Away with Murder. The Keating Four (R.I.P. Wes) have found themselves in another heart racing moment. Their plan to expose Laurel’s father as Wes’s killer has gone horribly awry. Simon is dead from an accidental shooting, Laurel is unconscious in an elevator after going into early labor, Michaela has presumably gone mad, and Asher winds up in jail. While her students fall apart, Annalise was last seen frantically performing CPR on Laurel’s baby. The Keating Four always manages to wind up in sticky situations, but for once this one cannot be blamed on Annalise. I’m sure this second half of the season will be just as action-packed as the first as we discover if the group manages to get out of this situation unscathed or if their crimes have finally caught up with them.
5. A Scandal/HTGAWM crossover episode is dawning.
Last, but definitely not least, is the fact that ABC recently revealed that a Scandal/HTGAWM crossover episode is in the works. We will finally be able to see two powerhouse characters interact with one another from two groundbreaking shows. The meeting of Olivia Pope and Annalise Keating is the crossover that we hoped for but never actually expected to get. It will be fascinating to see how the two women work together as well as how their worlds and fellow acquaintances mesh together. One can only wonder what kind of circumstances would bring together a lawyer and a fixer turned Chief of Staff.
