Hello and welcome to the #FSUGirlBoss column!
I am so excited for this column to start so we can share what it takes to be a girl boss and to highlight all of the hardworking and headstrong women here at the amazing Florida State University. According to Urban Dictionary, a Girl Boss is “A woman in control, taking charge of her own circumstances in work and life. Someone who knows her worth and won’t accept anything less.” Being a #GirlBoss isn’t easy, but with insight from some of campus’ most empowering girls, we will find out what it takes to be on the path of success.
To kick it off, let’s discuss some ways to get ourselves #GirlBoss ready this semester. I know you may be thinking, “it’s already October” but let me say that it’s never too late to get your head in the game. Let’s push past the, “I’ll start on Monday” and get the job done now. I have a good friend of mine who always says, “If you have something to do, do it now.” Well, you heard her, so let’s do this now ladies!
Step One: Get Organized

More organization equals less stress! An important part of getting organized is setting aside a time to plan your week out so, 1) You don’t overlap commitments and 2) You know exactly what you need to get done this week. For me, I love writing my schedule, due dates and other commitments down on something tangible rather than setting a reminder on my iPhone. An added bonus to this is letting yourself invest in one of those cute planners you’ve seen all over Instagram and Pinterest. Keep in mind that organization doesn’t apply to only what goes inside of your planner, but also where you live and your creative space! Give yourself a couple more minutes in your morning routine to clean up because there is no better feeling than coming home to a clean room.
Step Two: Prioritize

Figure out what/who means the most to you but never forget that you are your first and most important priority. One of the most valuable things that a roommate of mine told me was, “It’s okay to say no.” Up until then, I always said yes or tried to come up with an excuse so that I didn’t have to straight up say no. What I realized is that I am saying no to something but saying yes to many other things. No, I can’t go spend $25 on brunch two weekends in a row, but yes, I am sticking to my goal of saving more money.
Step Three: Be Your Best Self

Comparison will get you nowhere, so work on bettering yourself for only yourself. Embrace who you are and from that will come your best self. Everyone has their bad days, but bounce back from those better and stronger. This is your life, you’re the one who is in charge of defining it!
Step Four: Self Care

Are you getting enough sleep and is what you’re putting into your body fueling it? I know I sound like a parent asking these questions but they are super important. I’ve been trying to implement an evening routine into my day that helps me go to bed at a decent time. I first set an alarm to wake up in the morning and then put away my phone, light a candle and then pull out a book to get lost into. Whether it’s a book or taking a bath, find a way for some me time so you can wake up the next day ready to go!
Step 5: Work Hard, Play Hard

We all know that opportunities won’t be handed to us without working hard, so put in the time and get organized, prioritize and look after/be your best self. But remember that we are young and can have fun! Treat yo’ self and let loose every once in awhile and you’ll have the perfect balance of workin’ hard and playin’ hard!
I am so excited for the start of this column so that, together, we can all start our way to being a certified #GirlBoss. Stay tuned in the next couple of weeks for the first feature of a #FSUGirlBoss!
