5 Things to Know Before Traveling to London

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

Right now, I’m studying abroad in London and I think it’s safe to say that it is one of the most amazing and diverse places in the world. Everywhere you turn there’s something new to see and something new to do. Although we speak the same language, there are some definite differences I’ve picked up on during my time here so far. Here’s a little list of things to keep in mind:

1. Keep to your right and “mind the gap”

I’m actually not kidding. People here are lovely, but when it comes to getting from Point A to Point B, they are ruthless. Especially while navigating a Tube (aka Subway) station, just stay to the right. Otherwise you will be trampled.

2. Accents

Yes, the accents here will 100% have you drooling. But what I didn’t realize is that people here find American accents just as intriguing. So, if you see a cute Brit walking your way, talk just a little bit louder and you’ll be turning their heads real fast.

3. Bring a shopping bag

Or you will be paying for a bag at every store. Most of the time, they are only 5 pounds but it starts to add up fast. Plus, it’s such a great way to be environmentally friendly! Bring one from home or get one from a local shop as a souvenir that you will actually be able to use.

4. Fashion

If there’s a piece of clothing that’s been sitting in your closet for a little while because you’ve been unsure if you can rock it or not…bring it with you! Everyone in London has their own unique style, so anything goes here. Be bold and stand out!

5. Make your experience unique

London has such great tourist attractions like Big Ben, the London Eye and Buckingham Palace. Hit up all of those places and the free museums (they’re incredible), but make sure to also step out of your comfort zone and try to find something to do that’s off the beaten path and special to you, and you will have a lovely time!
