7 Not-So-Spooky Costumes Inspired by Classic Halloween Movies

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

How much fun can Halloween be for someone who hates horror movies and is easily scared? Well, as it turns out, quite a lot of fun. I have never been one to go to haunted houses during the fall season or see horror movies in theaters. Frankly, I’m that person who covers their eyes and ears during horror movie commercials. Good thing that Halloween is about so much more than being scared. It is called trick or treat for a reason, and I prefer the treat side of things. I celebrate Halloween by watching classic not-so-spooky movies with friends or dressing up for Halloween parties. If you are like me and always need some ideas for what to dress as for the Halloween season, here is some inspiration from our favorite classic Halloween movies. Get ready for some serious Tim Burton vibes.

1. The Nightmare Before Christmas

A Disney classic that the entire family can watch for not just one season but two. For this costume, there are many different options that will make you the best Pumpkin King or Queen you can be. An essential to pulling off the look of either Jack or Sally is a good understanding of makeup or possession of a friend that can help with making it look like you have stitches for Sally or skeletal features like Jack. If the makeup is too daunting to try, dress as one of the many interesting side characters like the Mayor or Lock, Shock and Barrel, Oogie’s henchmen.

2. Scooby-Doo and the Hex Girls

Tired of dressing as the Scooby gang for Halloween? Try dressing as the Hex Girls this Halloween season. Only true fans of the Mystery Gang will be able to remember those special animated Scooby-Doo movies that featured the iconic goth-punk band, the Hex Girls, as reappearing characters. If you are having trouble remembering, Luna, Thorn and Dusk are from Scooby-Doo and the Witch’s Ghost and Scooby-Doo and the Legend of the Vampire. This would be a great group costume to try with your friends that would be easy to recreate with a little imagination.

3. Beetlejuice

Probably the creepiest on this list, Beetlejuice includes both cult queen Winona Ryder and classic Michael Keaton. Beetlejuice will always be famous for its comedic ghost and Ryder’s goth girl aesthetic. The movie has many memorable looks that can be recreated for your Halloween purposes. To dress as Beetlejuice, find something with vertical black and white stripes and add in some green to accent the look. Dress as Lydia by finding a red tulle dress, styling your hair in a spiky way and create your own Handbook for the Recently Deceased by taping a picture of the cover on any book you own for a quick prop.

4. The Addams Family

The Addams Family’s Wednesday Addams is one of the most tried and true costumes due to how cheap and easy of a DIY it is. Wednesday’s outfit includes a classy black long-sleeve dress with a collar. If you have a black dress without a collar though, head to a fabric store and use lace or white fabric to cut out your own. The outfit would not be complete without braids and tall socks or tights. If anyone asks you what your costume is, hit them with the classic Wednesday line, “This is my costume. I’m a homicidal maniac. They look just like everyone else.”

5. Hocus Pocus

Hocus Pocus is one of the most popular Halloween movies of all time, starring Bette Midler as Winifred Sanderson. Get your fellow witches together to make your own representations of the three Salem sisters. I have seen many different ways that people dress up like them, so I would recommend having recognizable essentials, such as their distinct hairstyles, color schemes and of course the brooms and capes.

6. Coraline

I will not lie, this movie scared the life out of me as a kid. If it scared you too, then you know Coraline is essential in completing your not-so-scary Halloween experience. Dressing as Coraline would make for an interesting costume that you can put together with a few things you may already own. A blue wig cut short that every costume store should carry, a yellow raincoat and boots, blue jeans or leggings and some drawn on freckles is all you need to dress as one of Halloween’s most notable film characters. Don’t forget to bring some buttons for your eyes if you really want to freak your friends out.

7. Ghostbusters

Movie history was made in the ’80s when Ghostbusters came out. As a kid, you were probably wondering why Hollywood made a movie featuring the Michelin Tire man as our heroes’ main opponent. I still don’t understand it, but Ghostbusters is one Halloween movie that is enjoyable and definitely ridiculous for everyone watching. To pull this outfit off, you need to get a tan jumpsuit or utility suit and if you want to make the costume yourself, they have iron-on Ghostbuster patches online for cheap. For the proton pack, get a little creative with an old backpack for a look that can be found here. Spray paint a Nerf gun or old water gun black to finish the costume.
