Feb. 1 marks the beginning of one of my favorite months, Black History Month. Black History Month, while it shouldn’t be, is often the only time where Black people are celebrated in America for their accomplishments and excellence. The Tallahassee community has a lot of wonderful events happening that can help you celebrate Black History Month.
1. Attend the Harambee Festival on Feb. 24.

This self-proclaimed sociopolitical comedian has hosted a show on both FXX and CNN and is coming to our campus for the Social Justice Symposium hosted by the Black Faculty and Staff Network. If you don’t have time to take part of the whole symposium you should definitely take the time to learn something new from the Keynote speaker.

With dates from Feb. 22-25, find time to stop by this affordable and professional theatre venue. The night will include readings from classics like James Baldwin and Zora Neale Hurston, as well as original works of art from local artists. Take some time to appreciate the arts at an affordable cost.

While we should be learning about Black history all year long, February is a great opportunity to learn more about and celebrate Black history. Take some time this month to find an event that is educational and fun so that you can join in on the celebration. Don’t forget to be mindful of the spaces that you’re in and the privileges you may hold, but most importantly try to open up and learn something new!
