College is a time for meeting new people, but with impending midterms and essay due dates looming over us, branching out can seem difficult. Preparing for upcoming exams in the library is a foolproof way to immerse yourself in college culture while simultaneously crossing assignments off your to-do list. Here are seven types of people you will encounter while studying in a university library.
1. The Overachiever
A color-coded planner, labeled notebooks and the clacking of a keyboard resonating as you walk by are all signs that you are in the presence of an overachiever. Their motivation to get things done early secures them a spot at a real table near a power outlet instead of on the floor or in a vacant chair dragged near an outlet.
2. The Multislacker
They’ve pretty much accomplished everything, except for what they actually went to the library to do. Their study space will be lined with books, snacks and most importantly their laptop. Their laptop will sport multiple tabs at once, some academic and others not. A little Netflix or online shopping, anyone?
3. The Snacker
Studying for midterms is a draining process and makes just about everyone hungry. A snacker has to constantly be eating something. Otherwise, they’ll lose their will to work and become irritated. Chip bags will rustle. Containers will be popped open and snapped shut. Crunching, no matter how vigilant the attempt at muffling, will be heard.
4. The Night Owl
Around two in the morning, occupancy in the library starts to dwindle. Those who stay after three are the reason why coffee is accessible within the library itself. They work better during the later hours, and once they get started, they won’t stop until they’re decaffeinated.
5. The DJ
Someone in the library will listen to their music at a volume that is just high enough for others to hear, but not quite loud enough to say anything about. This is usually accompanied by tapping feet and pencil drum solos.
6. The Rollercoaster
Midterms are stressful. Papers are overwhelming. Sometimes, a person just needs to let it all out. This person will experience a magnitude of fluctuating emotions. One moment they will be tackling their assignment, and the next, their eyes become pricked with tears as they lay their head down across their folded arms murmuring about their plans to drop out. A brief break will recharge their motivation.
7. The Comedian
Although distracting at times, a person who makes others laugh is priceless. Some students get annoyed by the constant joking that happens when the comedian is around. They generate a lot of noise and attract attention. The comedian is a social butterfly that turns a stressful situation into a memory.
