Are You Prepared For Winter? Your Skin May Not Be

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

Cooler days are officially on their way to the Tallahassee area, and although cold weather in the capital city makes for some beautiful afternoons, it can also make for some dry, cracked, and damaged skin as well. Before another Florida winter comes into full effect, it can be beneficial to adopt a skincare routine now in order to maintain, and even improve, the health of your skin. By implementing a few of these tips into regular habits, you and your skin will be more than ready to tackle the next “snow day” that ices its way into town.

Stay Hydrated

More often than not, we tend to drink way more hot coffee and teas in the cooler months than we probably should. Although you may not feel as thirsty in the winter like you do in the summer, your body still needs plenty of water; if not more. It can be difficult to stay properly hydrated at times, but quenching your skin from the inside out is an important part of your health. Because your body needs an abundance of water each day, try substituting one of those double dark peppermint hot chocolates for a big glass of water every now and then. And if drinking plain water seems like an less-than-exciting option during the holiday season, try one of these festive infused waters instead.

Exfoliate

Not only is exfoliation great for helping to unclog pores and ridding the skin of old cell build-up, but it can also be the key to keeping your skin looking bright, smooth and moisturized. Invest in a quality loofah or brush and try adding an exfoliation scrub that contains substance such as beads or salt for some of the best results. Although everyone’s skin varies, exfoliation should occur about once a week for most skin types. Plus, if your lips need a little extra TLC in winter, rub an old toothbrush in circular motions and follow up with a moisturizing lip balm afterwards.

Moisture is Key

The importance of moisturizing cannot be stressed enough! By including a hydrating product within your daily routine, you not only reap the physical and visible benefits of that day, but benefits that will be noticed for many years in the future as well. Keeping the skin moisturized can help to prevent signs of early aging and the frustration that comes along with having dry skin. If not properly taken care of, dry skin can become extremely irritable, leading to flakes, patches and even breaks in the skin as well. The use of thick moisturizers during the winter is the best option to combat the damaging effects that low humidity, heaters and hot water can bring. Also, exfoliating in the shower before adding lotion or cream can help the skin to better absorb product and increase hydration effects. Your skin tends to lose moisture at a rapid rate, so never be afraid to repeat application throughout the day if necessary!
