A Marvelous Comedy Night at Club Downunder this past Wednesday was, as they say, marvelous. With snacks provided and good, positive energy buzzing off the place, it was easy to sit back and enjoy myself even while waiting for the acts to come onstage. Although things got started a little later than planned, the acts made it more than worth the wait. Four incredible comedians delivered a number of jokes that got the crowd laughing and made the night something to remember.
I went into the experience blind. I wasn’t sure what to expect, and I kept my expectations at the minimum to prepare myself for the worst. Imagine how relieved and pleased I was when the worst never came. The venue hosted all female comedians in honor of women’s history month–yay! and four incredibly talented young women took the spotlight and stole the show each and every time.
The opening act, Anna Seymour, was a great opener and set an electric and comforting vibe throughout the venue. The one seemingly most inspired by The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, after which the night was named, she was almost equally as charismatic and hilarious as the beloved TV comedian. She was confident and witty, and she knew how to deliver a subtle joke that will take you by surprise and have you laughing out loud before you even realize it. My only complaint is that she wasn’t able to get more time onstage. Her act set the tone and let me and the rest of the audience know we were in for a treat.
The next act, Dominique Palmer, while new to the stage an audience member would never have guessed it unless she told it. Her self-deprecating jokes and dry delivery were not only funny but also made it easy to relate to her brand of sit-down comedy. If this was just her second show, I’m excited about what else she has in store for the future and I’m her progression as a comedian will be a marvel to witness (see what I did there? Marvel for a marvelous night? Yeah, I’ll stop).
The following act seemed to be the exact opposite of rookie, when Reagan hit the stage, she got applause that was a bit louder than the other and made references to having been up there before. Her experience with shows, her confidence and her delivery paired with her strong sense of self made it quickly very easy to understand why she was loved by those who’d seen her before in the audience. Even if the joke itself wasn’t always top-notch, her delivery made up for it and it’s easy to see a future for her in the world of comedy as we know it if the way she commands the stage is anything to go off.
Last but not least, Mila Sumerall. Probably my favorite act in the show. All the girls were completely unique in their approach, but Mila’s brashness made her stand out and a great closing for the show. Funny, provocative and fresh, a set to remember.
Every one of these girls did a phenomenal job, and I can honestly say I’ll be in the crowd at the next show.
