We all know Florida State University (FSU) is a HUGE school with interesting characters, yes? It’s very hard to categorize the students in FSU’s 16 undergrad colleges. It is hard to use a zodiac sign or a dog breed because there is too much going on in the individual colleges to use that narrow of a stereotype. Of course, Super Bowl performances are the only way to categorize all 33,000 students. The celebrity/ies, performance, wow-factor, and location all tie into why I am right about representing FSU colleges through Super Bowl Performances.
College of Arts and Sciences: BEYONCE, 2013
Both the College of Arts and Sciences and Beyonce have SO much to offer and include the strongest variety of diversity (the college’s major and her ENTIRE discography). Two classics. What more is there to say?
College of Business: Eminem, Dr. Dre., Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar and Mary J Blige, 2022
Every artist that performed in this Super Bowl revolutionized music and culture in some way, which our COB students deserve credit for in their own respect. They both take the phrase “work hard, play hard” and implement it into their work, lifestyle, and who they are.
COLLEGE OF COMMUNICATION AND INFORMATION: LADY GAGA, 2017
Lady Gaga’s performance was fun and energetic and caught people by storm just like CCI students. Gaga’s words are poetry, and her people skills are 10/10. and she carries herself with so much confidence: a College of Communication and Information student to a T.
College of Criminology and Criminal Justice: Madonna, 2012
Controversial, but this is the most correct performance by far. Both are breaking stereotypes and shedding light on issues that society has swept under the rug. Legendary in their ways.
Dedman College of Hospitality: The Black-Eyed Peas, Usher and Slash, 2011
Both the performance and the college give you a feeling of comfort, fun and nostalgia. This performance is so nostalgic looking back on and represents what the Dedman students are looking to accomplish with that degree: a sense of great hospitality!
College of Education: Katy Perry, Lenny Kravitz and Missy Elliott, 2015
Both are misunderstood but interestingly enough widely remembered. Specifically, Katy Perry (left shark and right shark included) appealed to a childlike audience just like our future educators of the world (and current College of Education students).
COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING: RIHANNA, 2023
Might be controversial to put Rihanna here but it just makes sense. Like engineering students, she kind of disappeared and we don’t know what’s going on, but we know something amazing is happening behind the scenes. Both always produce fabulous work no matter how long it takes. I also feel like engineering students are always incredibly busy but always fit in time to pop out somewhere in their schedule. And they will both DEFINITELY make bank no matter the scenario.
College of Fine Arts: The Weeknd, 2012
Now, this might not make sense to you which is why it DOES make sense for the FSU College of Fine Arts. Both the college and The Weeknd were misunderstood by this performance. Fine Arts students don’t get enough credit for how much goes into their work, which was the same for this performance. All I can say about both are: the girls that get it, get it, and the girls that don’t, don’t.
College of Health and Human Sciences: Janet Jackson, Kid Rock, P. Diddy, Nelly and Justin Timberlake, 2004
Talk about energetic, a little crazy and all-around a banger. The students in the College of Health and Human Sciences are unironically some of the most hyper people I have ever come in contact with, which is why this performance represents them perfectly.
Jim Moran College of Entrepreneurship: Coldplay, Beyonce and Bruno Mars, 2016
Might be controversial but let me explain why I am right about this one. This performance just worked. Their matching outfits, their different music styles and the wow-factor were all there. Everything this performance had, a student from the College of Entrepreneurship has in their work.
COLLEGE OF MEDICINE: U2, 2002
This performance was very emotional for a lot of people because of their tribute to 9/11. This performance as well as students at the College of Medicine have their priorities of helping people out in the most genuine love and light.
College of Motion Picture Arts: DIANA ROSS, 1996
The special effects introduction mixed with Diana Ross leaving her performance in a helicopter represents the College of Motion Picture Arts perfectly. Has such a passion for what they want to pursue and know how to have fun but still make their performance spectacular.
COLLEGE OF MUSIC: Prince and the Florida A&M Marching Band, 2007
Now, this was the hardest college to match up with a Super Bowl. It is in fact the College of MUSIC, so the pressure was there. But one of the most iconic musicians just had to represent the college of music. We couldn’t forget about his background marching band as well, and there are so many background people, work, and history that goes into the College of Music.
COLLEGE OF NURSING: THE ROLLING STONES, 2006
Both are serious and both mean absolute business. The Rolling Stones were nothing less than iconic and both just have a clear vision at all times. Enough said.
College of Social Sciences and Public Policy: Shakira, Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny, J Balvin and Emme Muniz, 2020
Both are iconic, fiery and dedicated. This was an epic performance and it had to be paired up with the college of our future politicians, diplomats and studiers of different countries and their cultures. Plus, the halftime was in Miami, one of the worldliest cities in the country.
COLLEGE OF SOCIAL WORK: MICHAEL JACKSON, 1993
What is more fitting than Michael Jackson’s performance of “We Are the World” and “Heal the World” featuring 3,000 children? His message of this Super Bowl and the College of Social Work both doing good for the world just makes sense.
I honestly don’t think FSU’s Colleges could be better represented by any other medium. With Rihanna’s recent incredible (and way overdue) Super Bowl performance, this just seemed exceptionally fitting.
