How To Make the Most of FSU’s Campus When You No Longer Live In a Dorm

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

Like most freshmen in college, I lived in a dorm when I came to FSU. At the time, I wasn’t thrilled about the twin-sized bed, small closet, and shared bathroom quarters with other girls (especially ones I wasn’t familiar with yet). However, by the end of the year, I concluded that living in a dorm is, in my opinion, the best way to start your college years. Nearly everything I needed as a young 18-year-old living on her own for the first time was right at my fingertips, including food, classes, the gym, the doctor, and, of course, my new friends.

I’m now in my second year at school here, and like most of my friends, have opted to move into an apartment. I couldn’t wait to figure out how I was going to decorate my new living space, now including the luxury of my own bedroom and bathroom. Despite being just minutes away from FSU’s campus, this transition came as a bit of a shock to me. I often find that I’m kicking myself over the fact that I took being in the dorms for granted. Now, I face more challenges of isolation in my apartment, no longer being just a few doors down from my best friends, or having the ability to walk out the door onto Landis Green.

As it turns out, dorms weren’t only convenient for the money I saved, but for many other aspects of my everyday routine. I truly love our campus here at FSU, but feel I’m required to put in greater effort to spend my time there now. After some adjustments, I’ve found ways to experience the best of both worlds and make the most out of our beautiful and resourceful campus, even though I don’t live right there anymore.

Find Your Favorite Study Spots

Finding a good study spot is a must for me to stay focused and motivated. Luckily, our campus has a lot of great spots to help me get out of the house and work. Whether you’re hitting Strozier Library, the Student Union, 1851, or even The Sweet Shop, setting apart a few times a week to study away from home is a great way to utilize all the places FSU’s campus has to offer and experience a change of scenery.

Take Classes At The Leach

The FSU Leach Recreational Center includes 120,000 square feet of cardio equipment, strength machines, sports courts, a pool, and even steam rooms. It’s in everybody’s best interest to take advantage of this resource and all it has to offer. One way I recommend doing this is by taking fitness classes! The Leach hosts a large variety of group workout classes every single day. This could be a great way to get out of the house, make friends, and stay active!

Join Campus Organizations

Joining campus organizations is a great way to make new friends and meet up on campus! FSU has so many clubs to offer, from intramural sports to Greek life. This is a great way to make connections within your school, even if you live far away, and you’ll likely find yourself partaking in more activities around campus because of it. Joining campus organizations allows you to immerse yourself in FSU’s community in a setting outside of just the classroom.

Hot Girl Walks Around Campus

My personal favorite way to feel part of campus is to take a hot girl walk! You can do this solo or with friends. All you need is a good playlist to strut to. Passing monuments like Westcott Fountain, Landis Green, and Doak Campbell Stadium is my favorite way to spend time on our gorgeous FSU campus.

Living away from your school’s campus can be challenging, but you don’t have to feel so distant from all the action.
