FSU’s SLC Is Taking On Speed Dating With “The Buzz”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

As the month of February begins, the world suddenly seems so obsessed with love. There are flowers upon flowers at your favorite stores, chocolate flying off the shelves, and now everything and everyone seems to come in pairs this month. Valentine’s Day rapidly approaches, and how does the SLC want to celebrate? They are hosting a speed dating event modeled after “The Button” on YouTube.

The premise is fairly simple. You and a stranger meet for your first date and talk to get to know one another. If your date lasts 10 minutes, you can go on a second date together. However, there’s a button between you, and as soon as it lights up, you can hit it to swap out your date. Whoever hits it first gets to stay and meet someone new.

Dating is hard, and finding out who you like and who you feel comfortable around is even harder over text, which has become the new norm. Dating apps have taken the fun out of meeting people in person, getting to know one another, and testing out that immediate connection. Now, it’s an endless cycle of swiping and weeding out the less desirable candidates. At least with this fun event it takes away the faux persona someone may have online and lets you judge for yourself if there is a connection within minutes. Instead of waiting hours for a bland response, come out and spend a fraction of that time you would have waited on a response and talk to someone in a more organic manner.

As a way to bring fun to campus and to celebrate with the single people here at FSU, the SLC is hosting “The Buzz” on Saturday, Feb. 10, at 2 p.m. Take a chance and meet other singles, find love, and celebrate Valentine’s Day with someone new — perhaps.

It’ll be interesting to see how different the SLC’s version is from the original and how they will pair contestants up. Will they use your majors and ages to try and pair you up by compatibility, or will it be totally random? While one can only speculate at this time, I wonder if there will be enough contestants to even match one another up based on compatibility on paper or similar answers on the signup sheet.

How will it go down? Will there be any unexpected second dates this event leads to? Not every second date will work out, but isn’t that what dating is? It’s trial and error until you find someone you like and enjoy the company of. So, why not take a chance on dating and meeting someone else who’s willing to put themselves out there like you are?

Here’s the signup sheet, where you’ll input basic information such as your name, age, and email and explain why you would make a good participant. Wear your heart on your sleeve, profess to the world that you’re ready to find love, and don’t be afraid to take a leap of faith!
