The Florida State University women’s basketball team has just achieved their 20th victory this season and fans are loving it. To achieve this big win, they beat competitive opponent Wake Forest on Feb. 2 with an astounding score of 72-44. This game also established a seven-game win streak at Donald L. Tucker Center, making the team even more determined and ready to keep winning. With only five losses this season, the team is on fire and reminding everyone they are not a force to be reckoned with. Ranked 3rd in the ACC, they are showing everyone the outcome of hard work and spirit.
With players from all over the country, the team comprises a diverse, passionate group of individuals who love their sport. No. 00 Ta’niya Latson leads the team with an average of 29.7 points per game, followed by No. 1 Jazmine Massengill with an average of 28.7 points per game. This team knows what it takes to win and is committed to doing whatever it takes to get there.
Sue Semrau, former Florida State Women’s basketball head coach for an astounding 25 years, witnessed the team’s fiery spirit and passion for the game last Sunday. In her coaching career, Semrau led the team to three Elite Eight attendances and achieved a total of 470 wins. Semrau began her coaching career at Florida State in 1997 and continued until her retirement last year. Her accomplishments will never be forgotten, with an announcement that she would be elected to the Florida State Hall of Fame this fall. Many fans, Boosters and former and current team members were there to congratulate and celebrate her accomplishments. She left a legacy on the Florida State Women’s basketball team, and this celebration reminded the team that they must continue their hard work for her and themselves.
The team has six more games to play in the regular season. They will face a few unseen opponents, including Syracuse and Virginia Tech. Other opponents include the University of Miami, Clemson, Georgia Tech and Wake Forest, all teams Florida State has already beaten this season. Their next game is Thursday, Feb. 9, in Miami at 6 p.m. The team’s first game against Miami took place at home, so make sure to tune in online and support and cheer for the team! With such an impeccable season, I know I will be watching and staying up to date with this team. The next home game takes place on February 16th against our new opponent, Syracuse.
Showing up to games can help a team so much, and I know they would love even more students and faculty to cheer them on their journey to the top. So, grab some friends, maybe some popcorn and soda, and support your fellow students and these amazing athletes!
