Our college years are weird times. We live with strangers. We’re up all hours of the night. Yet they’re the best years of our lives! Not only being this young am I encouraged to participate in “reckless college behavior,” but also it’s (dare I say) acceptable!

As college girls, it’s typical to wear tiny tailgating outfits, have sleepovers with our besties, and as Noles, not be questioned if seen swimming in a campus fountain. Our community (“the simulation”) makes these four years even more unique, so I’ve thought up weird antics that are outlandish if performed anywhere else, but acceptable here at Florida State University.

game days

If I’m going to start anywhere, it’s with game days. People travel from all parts of the country for this weekly holiday, and it’s not just for our top-ranking team. As a senior, let me list some of the craziest, yet now seemingly normal, behavior I’ve seen on game day.

  • Consuming alcohol starting at 7 a.m.
  • Wearing bikini tops with cowgirl boots.
  • The trend going around where your friend holds your ankles while you go upside down and dunk your head in an ice bucket and then shotgun. I have yet to participate in such outlandish and immature behavior, but it is on my to-do list.

walking

Next, the walking aspect. I’ve been closing my Fitness rings every single day just from going to and from my classes. This is only one perk about this beautiful campus. I don’t have a car here, so I find myself relying on walking to grab my meals, get to work, classes, and other on-campus events. This is a healthy alternative that is typical in college areas and other big cities, but I’m not sure if this is a lifestyle choice I’ll be able to participate in following my graduation.

THE STUDENT UNION BAR

One of the on-campus treasures we have at our university is the Union bar. Having just turned 21, I made a recent trip here and the concept as a whole still shocks me. I remember telling my parents about it and they couldn’t believe it. And I don’t blame them. It’s ironic to incorporate a place designed for students to work and complete assignments between classes on campus, and then add margaritas and piña coladas. It’s something my friends from home can’t relate to with their college campuses and it’s a silly fun fact from our Nole tour guides.

SLEEPOVERS EVERY NIGHT

Now for what I’ve been waiting to chat about, and possibly my favorite aspect of college. My first sleepover was in first grade with my friend, Brianna. We would stay up as late as we could having fashion shows and playing pretend games. The next day, I would hide from my mom so she couldn’t find me when it was time to pick me up so then our sleepover could last forever. My wish came true when I came to college. I’ve been living with the same two girls since freshmAn year and they are my best friends. Even at home sometimes my sister and I would sleep in my bed together and have a sleepover, although we still share a bedroom wall.

Something about sleepovers is the epitome of girlhood and it always makes me happy. Even after college, I plan to find a roommate, but I know it won’t be quite like the sisterhood I’ve created with my roomies here in college.

If you can’t already tell I love college! This is my last year, and I am breaking all boundaries during my final semester, how could I not while living in the simulation? With all the hype I am creating around this experience, I would like to end on an optimistic note. I read this advice in a book of essays once and the idea I collected was this: we can say this is the best time of our lives right now, but we don’t know what the future will be like. Maybe I’ll love a job in broadcasting. Maybe even further along, motherhood will be my favorite time of my life. Either way, enjoy your experiences while you’re here and be optimistic about what your future holds.
