At FSU and many other colleges, there is a clubbing culture in that many students participate. Being in Tallahassee, many students may think going out is their only option to have fun on the weekends, or maybe some don’t want to go out and are bored on the weekends. I am here to tell you some alternatives you have.

Karaoke nights at the bark

If you don’t already know what The Bark is, it is a vegan restaurant that puts on events near Railroad Square. On Wednesday nights, they have karaoke, and if you are into that kind of thing, it is a lot of fun. The Bark has an edgy vibe to it, and the people that show up are always an interesting bunch. It is a fun thing to do when you’re not feeling like going to white trash Wednesdays at Ken’s. It can also be a walk if you live on campus!

Learn how to play a new sport

There are so many club sports and intramural sports you can join, but beyond that, there are tennis courts, basketball courts, a track, a swimming pool and various fields free to be utilized by you and your buds. What is so great about the facilities is that there are lights so you can play at night! The tennis courts are always buzzing with people, and it is a great way to hang out with new friends while being active. I think most people would agree that finding a sport you love is so much more fulfilling than scrolling on TikTok.

Explore kava bars

If you are a kava-lover and have yet to find a Tallahassee kava bar, check out Kava Kaze! If you have yet to discover kava, it is a relaxing tea. Kava bars are a great way to meet people, as they typically catalyze conversation. They are also open late, so you can go there and fall into a deep conversation, and not end up home until 3 a.m.

Go to st. George island

If you are craving some beach time, I got you. Although an hour and 45 minutes may seem far for some, it is worth it. If you have a free day, get your friends together and carpool to the beach. Grab some Pub subs on the way or pack a picnic and make a day out of it. As spring approaches, so does summer weather! Even though Tallahassee may not be the most tropical place, we are still in Florida.

Explore Tallahassee’s nature

Tallahassee has some of the most beautiful parks, hiking trails and sunset places. Tom Brown Park has a gorgeous disc golf course and trails. Watching the sunset with friends is always a fun thing to do while enjoying their company and a beautiful view. All Trails on the app store gives you a list of great running, hiking, and biking trails in Tallahassee. Miccosukee Greenway Trail is a great out-and-back trail that is shaded and green. Maclay Gardens is always a fun place to go to enjoy nature, and they also have beautiful trails. There are so many hidden gems in Tallahassee for outdoorsmen and women!

Go bowling

Bowling is a fun activity if you want to be a little active, but not raise the heart rate. It is a great way to hang out with new people, and now it is super convenient that the student union has its own alley. What a fun way to be just a little competitive with your friends while being able to engage in community.

tRY NEW FOOD

This one may seem a little obvious, but I cannot stress this enough. Getting food with people is one of the best ways to bond. Tallahassee has some good food spots! If you have the means, host a dinner party! You never know what the conversation may bring. After dinner, play some games: board games, card games, Jackbox and the list goes on. Most people will say yes to getting food, so try it and who knows, you might meet a lifelong friend.

GO ON AN ADVENTURE

This one is more open-ended than the former. The key to going on an adventure is being spontaneous and curious. Getting in the car and driving somewhere with no destination is such a joy. I have a friend who drove an hour and a half and ended up at a skate park. She became friends with the local skaters and when she went back a week later, they remembered her. I think it is all about the people you meet and the impact you have on them. The adventure doesn’t need to be far; it doesn’t even need to be a driving destination, it just requires you to be open-minded. It is about not knowing what is going to happen and going by feeling. Lean into your curiosity and challenge yourself to see something you may not have seen or see it differently.

Happy adventuring!
