I Applied for 2 Reality Shows Casting Now (And Here’s How You Can Too)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

With the Fall 2023 semester (the first semester of my senior year) coming to an end, I’m starting to hit a bad case of senioritis. Obviously, what better to do than look at what reality shows are casting and apply for them? With shows claiming to help you find love or be a shortcut to fame, it can be tempting to leave the mundane life of homework and finals and take a little vacation with my ex on the beach.

Different types of shows require questionnaires which can range from short and sweet to lengthy and time-consuming. I applied for two different shows this semester and got to see how different the application process can be.

Love Island (US) had a lengthy application asking about choices you’d make on the show, family history, etc. They also require recent photos and give you the option to submit a video describing your worst date.

The Voice‘s application was less lengthy, only requiring basic information and a video showcasing your singing. They do have several options for the format in which you audition: a pre-recorded video, a live video that is immediately submitted to be reviewed, and an in-person audition. One thing to keep in mind when auditioning for shows like The Voice and America’s Got Talent is that you don’t perform for the TV judges until you’ve been through several rounds of judging. How many rounds, you may ask? I’ve heard three, but with my voice, I’ve never made it past the first two rounds to confirm that.

If you’re still reading at this point, you might be curious about where to apply and how. Unfortunately, it’s not a very easy process. Finding legitimate applications can be difficult with so many websites catfishing for your information. One way to stay in the loop is to find casting agents on social media and follow them; they often give updates on shows with their network that are casting. Another way is going directly to the networks or show websites to try to see directly if they’re casting. I, fortunately, found the Love Island application through a casting agent I follow on TikTok, and I still receive emails from NBC for their talent shows since my little stint applying for America’s Got Talent in eighth grade.

A great resource for finding casting calls is backstage.com, which allows you to see tons of casting calls and search keywords for what they’re looking for. Most (if not all) of the casting calls on this site are unnamed for confidentiality purposes and also may be genuine acting casting calls, so definitely use the filters to make sure you’re applying for the right type of show.

Whether you’re a freshman just starting college or a senior about to graduate, we all know we have those moments when we just want to drop out or give up. While I love to show I’m a strong girl who can get through everything, I can’t deny a break from reality can be so inviting. At the end of the day, the worst thing they can say is no and life continues as usual. I’d never know if I was Love Is Blind material if I never tried though. With all the casting calls out there right now, the only question left is, are you Too Hot To Handle?
