“Don’t hate.”
When watching the classic, Cinderella, I think several things: I’m never going to be that much of a clean freak, mice don’t look that cute in real life, and where is my fairy godmother when I need help heading out to class? Actually, it’s safe to assume that all of us princesses here in college wish we had an adorable fairy godmother that conjured up carriages and cute dresses instead of our actual godmother who might just complain how we never call and that we’ve put on a little bit of weight, (this applies to our queen moms as well). Alas, we wish for a lot of things, (straight A’s, that person in the coffee shop to notice us, and for the price of make-up to go down so we can finally go crazy), but a fairy godmother is one thing that isn’t happening anytime soon, (never going to happen, period).
Also, if any male or female approaches you on Landis Green and asks you to try on a random shoe, I hope you’re considering your other options… or your overall life choices. Cinderella may have looked cute leaving behind a glass slipper, but a princess in college leaving her stiletto at a house party or public place does not garner the same emotions. Like, at what point when a person leaves (and if they leave with only one shoe I am assuming they are having difficulty even walking), do they forget their own shoe, and decide that’s okay? In the Disney classic, Cinderella gets her slipper and happy ending, but a princess will only get… well nothing, but just one less stiletto and most likely a hangover. Princesses, get heels that are both stylish AND comfortable so you’ll have no need to take them off later!
Don’t be busted.
I can go on about the etiquette of shoes, (and how glass footwear is something extremely foolish), but the real lesson for this week is the following: Don’t let the evil villains (haters) get to you!
I don’t even have to point out who Cinderella’s haters are in this film because they are the very reason why when we were little girls, we freaked out at the idea of step parents and cried. Anastasia, Drizella and Lady Tremaine…. the haters we all came to hate whenever they pushed Cinderella around. All of us princesses channeled our inner anger at the TV screen when the mean girls ripped apart the pink dress, when they locked Cinderella in a broom closet, and definitely when they walked with their noses in the air. Drizella? Tremaine? Is this a rap group of evil villains? If I had a step-sister with the name Drizella, I would go and cry to my fairy godmother too. Oh, and don’t get me started on that nasty cat named after the devil himself. It all just about raises my Disney blood pressure.
Despite their dastardly deeds, Cinderella didn’t let them deter her dreams from coming true. She went to the ball, seduced the prince, lost a shoe, and never once yelled or physically harmed the sisters or mother after finally escaping the broom closet. As a princess in college, we must always keep our heads leveled and our haters at a distance. Of course it isn’t easy, we all saw Cinderella in tears, but she finally got her good karma, and so will you! Where there is a princess, there is always a villain hater, and you must learn when to fight for your voice, or just count to three and maybe go clean something (or sing… whatever works). Once a princess is free of her villain, they no longer control her… and that is when the happy ending really starts. So whether it is spiteful roommates, not-so-great friends, or maybe even an evil professor, always know that a happy ending is just around the corner once you stop paying attention to them and keep doing what makes you such a great princess!
Drizella, Tremaine, Lil’ Anastasia… get out of our way. We princesses are here to make our dreams come true!
Bye, Haters!
