It’s been more than a decade since Avatar broke the all-time record at the box office. Even though the title has been passed down to Avengers: Endgame, Avatar is a fan favorite and many have wondered when and if a sequel would occur. In fact, according to Cinema Blend, an inside source of today’s movie entertainment, Avatar 2 and its several other sequels have been in development for years. The director, James Cameron, signed with 20th Century Fox to produce four more films in the series: Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 which have completed principal filming, and are scheduled to be released on Dec. 17, 2021, and Dec. 22, 2023. Following, would be the fourth and final film in the series which are scheduled to be released on Dec. 19, 2025, and Dec. 17, 2027 if all goes according to plan.
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves, Avatar 2 doesn’t even have an official title yet! However, according to BBC, there have been reports stating the second film could be called Avatar: The Way of Water. Reasons for this being that the story is said to be focused around the oceans of the beautiful planet, Pandora. As for the cast, Zoe Saldana had confirmed that she would be back as Neytiri in Avatar 2, 3, 4 and 5. In addition, Sam Worthington, who plays the main character, Jake Sulley, is said to return for the rest of the series as well.
As for the plot of the sequel, Cameron told Movie Web how the theme of family takes a big role in not only the sequel, but the upcoming films in the series as well. Hence, the majority of the new actors appearing in Avatar 2 are quite young. He stated, “The storyline in the sequels really follows Jake and Neytiri and their children. It’s more of a family saga about the struggle with the humans.” As for who will be playing the children of Jake Sulley and Neytiri, that casting has already been released. Jamie Flatters will play the oldest child of the Jake and Neytiri’s children, a boy named Neteyam. Britain Dalton will play middle child, nLo’ak. The youngest child and only daughter, Tuktirey, will be played by the young Trinity Bliss. Some other new additions to the cast are Kate Winslet as Ronal and Cliff Curtis as Tonowari. According to sources, Winslet was holding her breath for seven minutes at a time during production, which can only mean she’ll be playing one of the reef people of Pandora. As for Curtis, his character is presented as the chief of the reef people.
So much has been released and hinted about the upcoming films in the series. Fans are excited to head back to Pandora and see more of Cameron’s work. For now, stay up to date with your latest entertainment news and keep an eye out for that trailer!
