Dance Marathon at the Florida State University is a yearlong effort to prepare for an annual 40-hour event, where more than 1,800 students stay awake and on their feet to raise money and awareness for our local beneficiaries. This includes our local Children’s Miracle Network Hospital and the FSU College of Medicine. With the event quickly approaching, its many captains and executive board members have been working diligently to raise funds and awareness for the cause.
With the main event just one month away, Dance Marathon at FSU hosted its annual Rally Week from January 25-January 29, 2016. Rally week is a series of events and activities where participating organizations were able to unite in raising funds and creating infinite miracles, all for the kids (FTK)! Rally Week 2016 is one of the many events team members have held thus far to excite students about the main event that will take place on February 26- 28, 2016.
Dance Marathon at FSU kicked off rally week with a share it night Monday at Skate World Tallahassee where students spent the evening skating for the kids surrounded by those with a shared passion for this incredible organization. 50% of the proceeds made went back into each participating team’s fundraising page. On Tuesday, Aramark sponsored a share-it day at the union, where a portion of proceeds from food sales was donated to Dance Marathon at FSU! Participating locations included Pollo Tropical, Papa Johns, Freshens, Subway, Einstein’s, Salad Creations, Chic-Fil-A, Rising Roll and Chili’s. If applicable, students were to write their organization’s name onto the back of the receipt so a portion of the proceeds made could go directly into that organization’s fundraising page.
Following the share-it day, Dance Marathon hosted Red Wagon Wednesday on Landis Green. Members of Dance Marathon’s executive board and core team were present to provide background information on DM to raise awareness. At this event, students wrote letters to friends and family encouraging them to donate. Additionally, Change for Children took place where each participating organization had their own wagon in which coins or dollar bills could be placed. The goal was to avoid receiving change, but to place change in others’ wagons and collect dollar bills in your own. To conclude the week, Dance Marathon participants were encouraged to raise $21 by midnight Friday to attain 21 minutes of sit time in honor of its 21 years as an organization at FSU.
However, there is still more to come! Dance Marathon will be hosting its 1st annual colored powder paint festival called FTKolor next Thursday, February 4 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Have you ever wanted to participate in the color run but didn’t actually feel like running? Here is your chance! Dance Marathon will be providing the color powder paint that is also used in color runs to be thrown freely on the Heritage Grove field. There will be a DJ, food, various activities and 1,000 pounds of powder paint! $10 pre-sale tickets can be purchased online here or $12 the day of the event at Heritage Grove. How exciting does this sound? Do it FTK!Â
