In this article, I will be sharing five of the most timeless Hispanic love songs that every Spanish speaker will be sure to relate to during this upcoming St. Valentine’s Day holiday.
1. “Colgando en Tus Manos” (Hanging in Your Hands) By Carlos Baute ft. Marta Sánchez
If you come from a Hispanic background, you’re bound to hear this song at least once in your life. Carlos Baute found himself with a smash hit when he released this addictive yet heartfelt duet. The Venezuelan teamed up with Spanish singer Marta Sánchez in a song that tells the story of two lovers who will stop at nothing to be together. However, they seek reassurance from one another during moments in which they second guess their lover’s ability to hold on to the love they share. “Colgando en Tus Manos” is the epitome of what it means to be in love and be loved in return.
2. “Rosas” (Roses) By La Ojera de Van Gogh
Yet another smash hit, this time written by a talented Spanish pop-band. However, in this song, the lovers in question are now a thing of the past. “Rosas” is written from the perspective of a woman who spends her days reminiscing about her first love. Every Friday evening, she gets dressed and waits patiently for the possibility that said love will appear with a bouquet of 1,000 roses to take her back. The storyline is nothing short of depressing, but singer Amaia Montero’s sweet vocals compel listeners to sing along with a smile as they daydream about one day being the receiver of such a beautiful gesture of love.
3. “Ciega, Sordomuda” (Blind, Deaf, Mute) By Shakira
Who on earth does not recognize or admire the legendary artist that is Shakira? Before being an international superstar, the Colombian singer’s discography was very much filled with acoustic guitars and lyrics about young love. One of her earliest hits, “Cigea, Sordomuda,” is all about the ways falling in love renders you weak. 5. “Amor Eterno” (Eternal Love) By Juan Gabriel
This famous ballad has the power to produce tears from even the most stoic being. It’s not the typical song one would play on a holiday like St. Valentine’s Day. Día del Amor y la Amistad in Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula is not exclusive to lovers. Instead, it celebrates friendship, family and love in general; “Amor Eterno” is the ultimate song to listen to when remembering lost loved ones. Originally written after his mother’s death, Juan Gabriel reaches into listeners’ hearts as he laments on the eternal love he and his mother will always share. Regardless of her passing, he anticipates the day that they’ll be reunited so that they can continue to love one another.
